Consultancy: Conflict Analysis - Kenya & Somaliland

Danish Demining Group (DDG) is a unit within the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) specialised in Armed Violence Reduction (AVR) and Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA). DDG was established in 1998 and has been operational in the Horn of Africa since 1999 The focus of our work has increasingly moved towards AVR, including community-driven approaches to improving public security provision, conflict management and conflict analysis and sensitivity. In Kenya, DDG’s portfolio includes a cross-border community safety and conflict management project in Turkana, West Pokot and Karamoja and research on oil and conflict in Turkana which focuses on promoting conflict sensitivity in the emerging oil sector in Kenya.
DDG Kenya has secured funding to carry out a conflict analysis covering five counties in north and north-eastern Kenya (Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo and Marsabit) and two regions of Somaliland (Toghdeer and Sool) and is looking to commence this work in the near future.
The conflict analysis should ensure an improved and up-to date understanding of the context and the conflict dynamics in these areas in light of recent developments related to devolution in Kenya and extractive industries in Kenya and Somaliland.
How to apply:
1.EXPECTED PROFILE OF CONSULTANT
· Advanced university degree in conflict analysis, peace studies, or similar field
· At least 5 years experience conducting conflict analysis
· Extensive experience of research or work related to extractive industries and social impacts of extractive industries
· Indepth knowledge of conflict contexts in northern/north-eastern Kenya and Somaliland is highly desirable
· Excellent research, report writing and analytical skills
· Proven capacity to write analytical, understandable and simple reports on conflict dynamics (candidates must submit 2 relevant examples of previous conflict analysis work they have carried out)
· Experience of working with secondary data analysis/desk reviews
· Experience of developing research tools and carrying out research
· Advanced knowledge of the Kenya political system from community to national level is highly desirable
· Advanced knowledge of the devolution process in Kenya is highly desirable
· Advance understanding of land and natural resource related conflicts are highly desirable
· Ability to provide clear guidance to field research teams
· Remote management experience is desirable
· Proven ability to deliver against targets and meeting deadlines within short timeframe
· Fluency in English
· Relevant computer skills: Word, Excel, internet
