ILRI Vacancy: Junior Informatician

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) ILRI seeks to recruit a Junior Informatician who will be a member the African Chicken Genetic Gains (ACGG) team in Animal Biosciences Program, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.
A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China). www.ilri.org.
Main duties & responsibilities:
The holder of this position will be tasked in development of different software and systems that will be used in the ACGG project and also assist in field sample collection. He/She will also conduct trainings within the campuses and in the field on the developed systems and solutions. In addition the position holder will assist in capacity building of the different partners in the project. He/She will liaise with different projects and teams who will be conducting sampling activities to ensure that their sampling needs in terms of hardware and software requirements are met.
  • Develops in-house systems that will be used in the project and by different projects;
  • Preparation of sampling kits and liaises with project teams to ensure their sampling requirements are met;
  • Maintains sample collection and tracking systems;
  • Ensures different databases and datasets that support the various systems are up to date;
  • Data management of project data as collected by the different projects;
  • Ensures that all systems, databases and datasets are backed up on a regular basis and the backups are working;
  • Liaises with project teams to ensure that their sampling systems are running ok and are usable in a field setting;
  • Training of partners and project teams in the developed systems and softwares;
  • Field travel to train sampling teams on the developed solutions and ensure that the systems are usable in the field.
Minimum Requirement:
Education:
  • A minimum of BSc degree in Computer Science or Information Technology or a related field.
Experience:
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in development of information systems
Skills:
  • Strong database skills. A strong background of database design, development and management
  • Knowledge of SQL is preferred. Ability to manipulate data in a SQL based database is desired.
  • Concrete programming skills is desired. Ability to develop systems and maintain existing systems is a must
  • Knowledge and experience of programming and scripting languages is desired. Knowledge of PHP, Perl, Python or Java will be an added advantage
  • Experience in management of information systems will be added advantage
  • Good analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to work in a large multicultural team is highly desired
Duty Station:               Addis Ababa.
Job level:                      2C.
Monthly Base Salary: Birr 14,839 (Negotiable, depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.  Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
