The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Officer to manage implementation of field data collection for the range of surveys the project team implements; oversee preparation of logistics of field data collection and supervise enumerator training, financial records and reports, organize and maintain collected data. The incumbent will study IBLI and its pastoral economy by analysing collected data to deepen and expand IBLI’s research portfolio on pastoral economy in arid areas and support implementation of IBLI and Kenya Livestock Insurance Project (KLIP) product pilots.
ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries to keep their animals alive and productive, to increase and sustain overall productivity, find profitable markets for their products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases. www.ilri.org

Responsibilities
• Oversee implementation of field data collection, including preparing field logistics and budgets; procuring field activity tools; recruiting and training enumerators; supervising field team and implementation process.
• Contribute to development and revision of socio-economic field data collection tools.
• Contribute to cleaning, organizing, maintaining, and analyzing the collected field data.
• Provide research and analytical support to project scientists and contribute to research papers.
• Write research reports summarizing and analyzing data.
• Support IBLI team in coordinating with its research and implementation partners for extension, capacity building, sales and indemnity payout activities.

• A Masters’ Degree in Agricultural Economics, Sociology or Natural Resource Management.
• At least 5 years of experience of leading implementation of medium-scale (300+ households) socio-economic household panel surveys in field, including preparing logistics; recruiting and training enumerators; developing sample frame; and implementing and supervising the surveys.
• Experience of managing project cycle, including communicating and coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, enumerators, commercial partners, and local stakeholders; preparing budgets and keeping and reporting financial records for field activities; prepare plans and logistics before field activities and report on implementations of field activities; maintaining and procure electronic files and data and many assets for field activities such as laptops, smart phones, and GPS machines.
• At least 5 years of field-oriented research experience in pastoralist areas.
• Experience with statistical software such as STATA.
• Experience with computer-assisted personal interviewing software such as surveybe and GIS software is added advantage.

Terms of appointment: This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus. It is open to Kenyan nationals only. The position is on a 3-year contract renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
