Accountant for Humanitarian Comms Org

The power of film has been harnessed by our pioneering partner organisation, which has been using the silver screen to deliver life-saving information to refugees, internally displaced peoples and communities who have been affected by famine, disease and war. Not only do they transcend the linguistic barriers with infomercials covering many issues from landmines to sexual health, they also offer skills development that can empower refugees through self-expression in film-making workshops.
You will be the first volunteer on assignment with our partner, who is undergoing a period of change, and they have requested a very experienced volunteer, with broad accountancy and change management experience. Your task will be to undertake a detailed assessment of their internal controls and processes, and improve these. This includes a review of their use of QuickBooks; the Operations Director has noted that QuickBooks was appropriate for the organisation when they started; however, it no longer feels adequate, and they would really appreciate an impartial view on this. Finally, they would like support in preparing for an external audit and they feel your skills would be well suited to this task.
Through their activities, our partner makes a practical impact on critical issues, from health education to human rights, conflict resolution to economic empowerment. By offering communities that can often be marginalized a voice on the issues that affect them, these programs allow the possibility of self-advocacy and self-determination. Which combined with the fact that you will be the first volunteer with our partner means you will be required to work tactfully and build a mutually trusting and beneficial relationship with the staff at our partner organisation. It will help determine the nature of your work with the organisation and equally our relationship with our partner, so it is important to be sensitive to their needs.
