Peace Studies and Inter-religious Dialogue Course Facilitator

The course facilitator is responsible for the development and delivery of the Community Service Learning Track (CSLT) curriculum for a Peace Studies and Inter-religious Dialogue course offered through the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) and Jesuit Commons: Higher Education at the Margins (JC:HEM) to refugees and host community members in Kakuma refugee camp. The course will run for 15 weeks for a total of 150 hours. The facilitator will also provide academic tutoring and support in co-curricular activities for 35 or more students of the JC:HEM online diploma programme.

Responsibilities include:

  • Cooperate with a faculty member at a US-based Jesuit university to design the curriculum
  • Design lesson plans and training materials (audio-visual and print) for the course
  • Develop innovative curriculum based on research from a variety of resources
  • Conduct regular in-house training to refugee incentive staff assigned to the department
  • Facilitate a transparent and efficient recruitment process for students
  • Teach and continually assess the admitted students
  • Actively participate in the formation and strengthening of peace clubs in JRS facilities and other institutions in the camp
  • Maintain detailed monitoring and evaluation reporting records of the course
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with UN agencies, NGOs, CBOs, religious houses and other partners in order to facilitate the service learning component of the course
  • Conduct tutoring sessions for JC:HEM diploma students in cooperation with Kakuma-based team members and the lead academic tutor
  • Carry out monthly meetings with CSLT students as well as individual and monthly cohort meetings with JC:HEM diploma students in cooperation with the lead academic tutor
  • Assist with recruitment, special events and co-curricular activities for the JC:HEM diploma students
  • Provide relevant correspondence, reports and meeting minutes to the JRS-JC:HEM project director
  • Motivate staff to uphold the JRS vision and mission
  • Plan, monitor, implement and evaluate proposals and reports
  • Monitor the progress of the course and students to ensure adherence to set targets and implementation of time-frame, in consultation with the JRS-JC:HEM Project Director

Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in philosophy, religious studies, theology, or another related discipline
  • Two to three years experience in teaching, peace building, pastoral care, or related activities
  • Experience teaching adults in multicultural environments or a willingness to learn
  • Ability to develop curriculum and lesson plans relevant to a refugee audience
  • Excellent computer skills, proficiency in Microsoft Office and web-based applications
  • Interest in programme development
  • Proficiency in written and oral English
  • Excellent communication (written and oral) and leadership skills
  • Flexibility, resilience to stress and ability to adapt to working in remote areas with adverse climatic and weather conditions
