COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST

Amref Health Africa is seeking the services of an experienced Communications Specialist to provide leadership in refining the structure and systems of the organisation’s global communications function, to effectively support Amref Health Africa’s role and status as the leading African-based international organisation working in health development. He/she will also lead in drafting of global communications strategy for Amref Health Africa.
The Communications Specialist will report to the Chief Executive Officer.This will be a six-month assignment. Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed mid-February and will be expected to begin working in early March, 2015.

2.0 Principal responsibilities

The Communications Specialist will lead the process of refining the structure and systems of Amref Health Africa’s Directorate of Communications to meet global standards, and make proposals for maximising effectiveness and efficiency to meet the organisation’s communications needs and vision. This will include benchmarking the organisation’s communications function against those of peer international organisations, and a series of internal and external interviews. The incumbent will also lead in initial development of a global communications strategy for Amref Health Africa in close consultation with the Communications Task Force.

3.0 Deliverables

· Proposal on revised Amref Health Africa communications structure and systems
· Draft Global Communications Strategy
· Work programme and action plan as agreed with the CEO

4.0 Desired qualifications and experience

  • Master’s degree in communications or a related discipline
  • Track record of success at senior leadership and managerial level in communications in an international organisation
  • Knowledge and/or understanding of Africa’s development needs
  • Knowledge and understanding of the global health development agenda
  • At least 10 years’ progressive experience in communications, outreach and/or public information at national/international level, external relations, public affairs, public relations or corporate communications
