OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME :
To strengthen World Health Organization (WHO) presence in policy dialogue, strategic planning and health sector development agenda in line with the global development initiatives and the need for effective community involvement.
Description of duties:
Under the supervision and guidance of the cluster team leader and in close collaboration with the Administration team and other support structures, the incumbent provides support in the following areas:

1. Performs overall coordination of cluster administrative and support services; Supervise the work of the admin support team within the cluster, assign duties and monitor performance;

2. Ensures compliance with organizational rules and procedures on all administrative and financial matters and transactions; undertake regular briefing sessions for cluster team members.

3. Assists cluster team members in the liquidations of WHO funds advanced to Government counterparts in line with the WHO Financial rules and regulations; Monitors the implementation of Direct Financial Contributions (DFCs) to Government, including the financial and technical reporting. Ensures the smooth functioning of the Global Management Service (GSM) workflow process at the cluster level, including organizing regular briefings for staff members.

4. Provides coordinating support in preparation of cluster related meetings and seminars. Maintain a central list of trainers/resource people and supervisors from the regions and federal institutes and collate all background documentation related to the activities. Assist with logistical arrangements as appropriate (i.e. arrange note taking, coordinate preparation of minutes and reports, and arrange for translation/interpretation).

5. Ensures proper administration of physical resources and office arrangement for team members including vehicle, office equipment, furniture and supplies and produce status report on a regular basis.

6. Assists and compile requests for the procurement of goods and services; acknowledge receipt of goods and services including the maintenance and updating of the cluster inventory on non-expendable items.

7. Assists the HR in Leave administration for the cluster team members; Keeping track of contract renewals of team under the cluster and takes action accordingly; Compilation of Performance Management Development System (PMDS) of cluster team members; Processing of periodic medicals; Processing of temporary recruitment and selection; Processing of separations

8. Provides admin support to the team members of the cluster including Processing of correspondences; Travel arrangements; Meeting arrangements; Processing of stationery requirements and its inventory; Maintaining a filing system.

9. Compiles inputs to create and update cluster workplans in GSM; regular review of planned costs against workplan funding and award budgets.

10. Completes Award Activation, Distribution and Amendment requests.

11. Monitors the utilization of award budgets against expenditures, award distributions against approved project funding and PB allocations.

12. Provides support to staff in initiating Travel Requests (TRs) and advising on Travel Claim (TC) submissions with orientations on supporting documentations and Records Management (RMS) nomenclature.

13. Assists in monitoring and reviewing position costs and staff costs.

14. Follows up on cancellation of encumbrances on activities.

15. Performs any other related duties, including providing support to other areas of work, and the WHO country Office, as assigned. 
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
ESSENTIAL:

Completion of secondary education or supplemented by technical training or university courses in the field related to the work of the organization.

DESIRABLE:

First degree in Business Administration/ Accounting/ Social Sciences or related field would be an advantage. Additional training in Financial, Human and material resources management is an asset.

Training in, or sound knowledge of administrative procedures. 
Skills: 
Thorough knowledge of administrative skills including modern office procedures, ability to use commonly applied computer software packages.

OTHER SKILLS:

Proficiency in the use of standard office software such as MS Word, Power Point, Excel, Access etc., ideally with training in online work planning and financial systems.

Experience:

ILRI also manages the Biosciences eastern and central Africa (BecA) Hub at ILRI, the centre for excellence in modern plant and animal biology in Africa. It consists of a Hub based on the ILRI campus in Nairobi, Kenya and a network of regional nodes and other affiliated laboratories and organizations throughout the region. BecA requires several databases containing data associated with the CAAREA project to be consolidated.   The CAAREA project is a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional project focused on the reduction of the impact of aflatoxin on east African consumers and farmers. Aflatoxin is a mycotoxin produced by various species of fungi which often infest maize pre- and post-harvest.
The project has two major components each producing different as well as similar sets of data. There are several databases associated with different types of data from field and laboratory components of the project which would better suit the needs of the team if they were more seamlessly integrated. The goal of the this work is to provide a single portal to allow collaborators to query and obtain reports from the different datasets joined by key fields, while still maintaining single versions that are well backed up. It is envisaged that an overarching data system be built to manage and secure these data sets with respect to confidentiality, integrity and availability.
Responsibilities
  • Review existing datasets, workflows and investigate a suitable website to act as a gateway or house the databases on a single server.
  • Provide the project team with a framework for the final database system.
  • Build system, Overall data table construction, construct data dictionary and deploy and test database.
  • Present system to project team for alpha testing.
  • Present final product to research team.
Requirements
  • Msc/BSc degrees in Information Systems, Database Management, Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Significant (or > 2 years) experience in designing and using relational databases and relational databases servers (e.g. MySQL).
  • Experience in software development an advantage.
  • Knowledge and experience of Linux operative system is an advantage.
  • Experience on the use of desktop programming languages (e.g., Visual Basic, Delphi) for the development of data-driven applications.
  • Knowledge and experience of C++ or Java languages is an advantage.
  • Experience in the design and development of applications for mobile devices (e.g., PDAs, Android) is desirable
  • Ability to communicate effectively, work independently and work productively in a multidisciplinary, multicultural team;
  • Strong English language skills, both written and spoken.
Terms of Appointment
  • This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position for a period of three months.

This position is job Grade 2C Level 2, with a starting gross salary of KES100,118 per month within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.

Responsibilities
  • To provide support in animal research trials;
  • To collect biological samples from livestock in experimental trials, under the guidance of senior project staff;
  • To assist with data input and processing;
  • To assist with writing of project reports;
  • To maintain relationships with different stakeholders including farmers and farmer groups, suppliers and ILRI ancillary staff, in order to facilitate the efficient prosecution of research trials;
  • Conduct basic laboratory nutritional analysis (under supervision (after appropriate training);
  • Organise and contribute to capacity building through relevant supportive training to Higher Degree (Research) students;
  • Other such duties as deemed consistent with the position by supervisors.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science (Animal Production), or equivalent, from a recognized university;
  • 2 years of experience in a related role;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in participation and contributing to conduct of applied research trials involving ruminants;
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collegially with technical and scientific staff and students;
  • Demonstrated experience with using computer software for data analysis (such as SAS, SPSS,STATA and GENSTAT).
  • Demonstrated experience in writing project reports and training manuals;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in cattle husbandry;
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams of scientists students and partners;
  • Ability to communicate with different stakeholder groups;
  • Understanding of the livestock production Kenya;
  • Strong English & Kiswahili language skills, both written and spoken;

  • Ability to work under minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadlines.

The Country Director, Kenya will provide the strategic vision and leadership for the Kenya country program. Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning and Management
  • Working closely with the Regional Director, and regional team, develop a strategic direction and plan for the country program

  • Working with country senior management team ensure the development, implementation and monitoring of financial and operational policy and procedures to ensure constant compliance with IRC and donor policies across the program
  • Promote coordination and teamwork between program and operations staff to improve quality of proposal submissions and program delivery
Human Resource Management, Staff Development & Retention
  • Develop a positive work environment for all staff supported by a professional level human resource management function
  • Support and hold management staff accountable for providing staff development opportunities and planning
    Requirements:
  • Graduate degree in relevant field;
  • At least ten years of international work experience covering both emergency and post-conflict development programming;
  • Extensive program development and fund raising experience, prior experience with European, US and international donors;
  • Strong human resource management skills including capacity building and mentoring;
  • Experience supervising and managing a multi-disciplinary team in a cross-cultural setting;

Medical Instructor

Medical Instructor in Ethiopia
In 2012, Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education launched the Medical Education Initiative (MEI) to increase the country’s human resource for health, specifically the quantity and quality of medical doctors in Ethiopia. This included the opening of 13 new medical schools throughout the country; however, this effort is hindered by the lack of qualified health professionals to teach to serve as medical instructions for the new medical students. In conjunction with the MOH, the Volunteer Healthcare Corps is currently recruiting medical doctors and health professionals in the Ethiopian Diaspora and non-Diaspora to fill this urgent need and teach the next generation of Ethiopian doctors!
Objective: Through a systems based approach to medical education, Volunteers will teach current medical students basic sciences such as microbiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology or a topic in their field of expertise. In order to connect classroom learning with problem-based skills lab activities, volunteer medical educators will support clinical training at the associated teaching hospitals by strengthening clinical teaching and professional competency development (PCD) skills of students. On a wider scale, they will also help to review and edit the revised MEI curriculum.
Volunteer activities:
  • Teach current medical students basic sciences (Biochemistry, Immunology & Virology, Pharmacology, Medical Physiology, Neuroscience, Medical Ethics, Public Health, and Pathology- General and Systemic, or a topic in a field of expertise) within the MEI curriculum
  • Serve as a faculty and student mentor under the direction of the dean of the medical school, as needed
  • Develop lectures and be involved in curriculum updating at the assigned university; this includes the Development of Teaching & Learning Materials and Brochures on areas of expertise.
  • Work with university staff and MEI coordinators to monitor and evaluate the academic strengths and weaknesses of the institution and to help the development of a better educational system
  • Support clinical training at associated teaching hospitals by strengthening clinical teaching and professional competency development (PCD) skills of students, as needed
Benefits Package: The Volunteer Healthcare Corps covers all travel related costs (flights to and from Ethiopia, visas, permits, vaccinations) and provides appropriate housing and a living stipend as well as other benefits. Desired Skills and Experience:
AIHA and the Ethiopian Ministry of Health are seeking candidate with the following qualifications.
Required:
  • PhD in Basic Medical Science, MD (GPs, specialist and sub-specialists), MS in Biological Sciences (Anatomy, Histology, Biochemistry, Physiology, Neuroscience, etc.)
  • At least 2 years lecturing or mentoring at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Familiarity with the new systems based approach to medical education, problem-based learning, evidence-based clinical practice
  • 1 year commitment preferred, less time negotiable
Preferred:
  • A self-motivated and self-starter, with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team and excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to develop cooperative working relationships
  • Fluency in any Ethiopian languages
  • Familiarity with the Ethiopian Healthcare System

Postgraduate Training Fellowships for Women Scientists from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries

With funds generously provided by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) has instituted a fellowship programme for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa and Least Developed Countries (LDCs), who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a PhD, at centres of excellence in the South (developing countries), outside their own country.
The general purpose of the scheme is to contribute to the emergence of a new generation of women leaders in science and technology, and to promote their effective participation in the scientific and technological development of their countries.
The specific aims of the scheme are:
- To improve access to educational and training opportunities in science and technology for young and talented women graduates from Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs.
- To increase the scientific productivity and creativity of women scientists in Sub-Saharan Africa and LDCs.
- To empower a new generation of talented women to assume a leadership role in science and technology and their application to sustainable development.
This fellowship programme is for female students from Sub-Saharan Africa or Least Developed Countries (LDCs) who wish to pursue postgraduate training leading to a doctorate degree at a centre of excellence in the South outside their own country.
The fellowship is offered to carry out postgraduate research in the natural, engineering and information technology sciences.

The Program aims to honour 10 talented African women for the quality of their research and assist them to pursue a brilliant career in science in any Sub-Saharan African country.
5 Fellowships of € 5,000 each will be granted to 5 African Ph.D. students and another
5 Fellowships of € 10,000 each will be granted to 5 African postdoctoral researchers.
The age limit for applicants is 40 years for Ph.D students and 45 years for postdoctoral researchers.
