Medical Instructor in Ethiopia
In 2012, Ethiopia’s Federal Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education launched the Medical Education Initiative (MEI) to increase the country’s human resource for health, specifically the quantity and quality of medical doctors in Ethiopia. This included the opening of 13 new medical schools throughout the country; however, this effort is hindered by the lack of qualified health professionals to teach to serve as medical instructions for the new medical students. In conjunction with the MOH, the Volunteer Healthcare Corps is currently recruiting medical doctors and health professionals in the Ethiopian Diaspora and non-Diaspora to fill this urgent need and teach the next generation of Ethiopian doctors!
Objective: Through a systems based approach to medical education, Volunteers will teach current medical students basic sciences such as microbiology, anatomy, biochemistry, and physiology or a topic in their field of expertise. In order to connect classroom learning with problem-based skills lab activities, volunteer medical educators will support clinical training at the associated teaching hospitals by strengthening clinical teaching and professional competency development (PCD) skills of students. On a wider scale, they will also help to review and edit the revised MEI curriculum.
Volunteer activities:
  • Teach current medical students basic sciences (Biochemistry, Immunology & Virology, Pharmacology, Medical Physiology, Neuroscience, Medical Ethics, Public Health, and Pathology- General and Systemic, or a topic in a field of expertise) within the MEI curriculum
  • Serve as a faculty and student mentor under the direction of the dean of the medical school, as needed
  • Develop lectures and be involved in curriculum updating at the assigned university; this includes the Development of Teaching & Learning Materials and Brochures on areas of expertise.
  • Work with university staff and MEI coordinators to monitor and evaluate the academic strengths and weaknesses of the institution and to help the development of a better educational system
  • Support clinical training at associated teaching hospitals by strengthening clinical teaching and professional competency development (PCD) skills of students, as needed
Benefits Package: The Volunteer Healthcare Corps covers all travel related costs (flights to and from Ethiopia, visas, permits, vaccinations) and provides appropriate housing and a living stipend as well as other benefits. The VHC also provides in-country support through our office in Addis Ababa and an orientation for volunteers. Volunteer contribute their time, expertise and enthusiasm to the placements.
