Department: Livestock Systems and the Evironment (LSE)
Duration: 1 year fixed term contract
International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a Research Technician to support research within the Livestock GHG measurement and mitigation project. S/he will provide support for the investigation of the enteric and manurial greenhouse gas emissions from livestock.
ILRI works to enhance the roles livestock play in pathways out of poverty in developing countries. ILRI is a member of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) Consortium, a global research partnership of 15 centers working with many partners for a food-secure future. ILRI has two main campuses in East Africa and other hubs in West and southern Africa and South and Southeast Asia. www.ilri.org.
The Centre’s headquarters are located in Nairobi, Kenya, and research is conducted in 31 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. We are supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and receive funding from over 50 different donors.
CGIAR is a global agricultural research partnership for a food-secure future. Its science is carried out by 15 research centres that are members of the CGIAR Consortium in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations. www.cgiar.org.
Responsibilities
  • To provide support in animal research trials;
  • To collect biological samples from livestock in experimental trials, under the guidance of senior project staff;
  • To assist with data input and processing;
  • To assist with writing of project reports;
  • To maintain relationships with different stakeholders including farmers and farmer groups, suppliers and ILRI ancillary staff, in order to facilitate the efficient prosecution of research trials;
  • Conduct basic laboratory nutritional analysis (under supervision (after appropriate training);
  • Organise and contribute to capacity building through relevant supportive training to Higher Degree (Research) students;
  • Other such duties as deemed consistent with the position by supervisors.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science (Animal Production), or equivalent, from a recognized university;
  • 2 years of experience in a related role;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in participation and contributing to conduct of applied research trials involving ruminants;
  • Demonstrated ability to work constructively and collegially with technical and scientific staff and students;
  • Demonstrated experience with using computer software for data analysis (such as SAS, SPSS,STATA and GENSTAT).
  • Demonstrated experience in writing project reports and training manuals;
  • Demonstrated experience and ability in cattle husbandry;
  • Ability to work with interdisciplinary teams of scientists students and partners;
  • Ability to communicate with different stakeholder groups;
  • Understanding of the livestock production Kenya;
  • Strong English & Kiswahili language skills, both written and spoken;
  • Willingness to travel;
  • Ability to work under minimal supervision;
  • Ability to work under pressure and deadlines.
Terms of appointment:
This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) positions based at ILRI’s Nairobi campus and is for a 1 Year fixed Term contract.
Job level and salary:
This position is job level 2B with a starting salary of KES 78,025 per month. In addition to salary, ILRI offers Medical insurance for staff and dependents, Life insurance, Pension at 12.5% employers contribution, Annual holiday entitlement of 30 days+ public holidays within ILRI’s National Recruited Staff Scheme.
