Communications and Advocacy Officer for the Southern NGO Network

ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT
Adeso is an expanding and vibrant African based international development and humanitarian organization. At Adeso, we work with African communities who are yet to realize their full potential; working inside these communities to create environments in which Africans can thrive. Our belief that economic, social and environmental security is the bedrock of a healthy community drives the nature and intent of our programming. We work to prevent and overcome situations that adversely affect community well-being by: reinvigorating the economy, developing skills for life and work, providing humanitarian aid, and influencing policy.
Adeso, in partnership with several of the organizations participating in the primary research, proposes to establish a global network of SNGOs to allow them to play a greater role in response, recovery and resilience, access funding directly, share learning, and have a greater voice on policy platforms, all of which would serve to enhance the effectiveness and relevant of humanitarian efforts. Many advocates around the world have spoken about this unmet opportunity, but the ‘local-led’ movement has seen at-best partial progress.
OBJECTIVES OF THE ASSIGNMENT
The Communications and Advocacy Officer will support the SNGO Network Advisor in the next phase of its development, and namely, help to promote the network as the leading platform through which SNGOs around the world can convene to advocate for a more equitable and dignified humanitarian system. More specifically the Communications and Advocacy Officer will:
• Prepare a Comms and Advocacy strategy for the network
• Prepare a branding strategy for the network
• Manage and administer the grants, budgets and reporting for all related grant awrads for network activities and
• Prepare new proposals with budgets for additional donors via the network steering committee.
• Prepare materials for network events and consultations
SCOPE OF WORK
The Communications and Advocacy Officer will be expected to:
1.Prepare and Implement a Network Communications and Advocacy Strategy
a. Prepare a network communications and advocacy strategy designed to help the network achieve its goals and objectives
b. Identify key advocacy meetings, working groups, conferences, consultations, donor fora, and events where the network’s members, steering committee, advisor and director can advocate on behalf of the network.
c. Manage the budget for advocacy engagement.
d. Prepare quarterly reports for donors, the network steering commitment and network members on the network’s advocacy activities.
e. Prepare a monthly update/newsletter to network members on network activities and progress.
f. Liaise with members, donors, partners and prospective donors on a range of network activities.
g. Package and present advocacy messaging through social media, literature, website, reporting and presentations.
2.Prepare and Implement a Branding Strategy
a. Prepare and implement a branding strategy with:
  • Vision
  • Mission
  • Key messaging
  • Strong visual identifiers
  • Social Media presence
3.Build and Manage SNGO Website
a. Prepare wireframe of SNGO website
b. Prepare content for SNGO website
c. Develop ToRs to select web designers
d. Oversee build
e. Maintain site
CONCTRACT PERIOD
October 2015 – October 2016
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
• Degree in Communications, Journalism, International Relations or Marketing. A degree in Business Administration or another related degree will also be considered with relevant work experience.
• Experience managing networks, communities of practice, or any initiatives that require extensive coordination.
• Good grants and project management and organization skills.
• Excellent writing skills.
• Familiarity with donor management and related compliance issues.
• Familiarity with development and humanitarian issues.
• Understanding of all key aspects of grant award management.
• Well-developed capacity for taking initiative.
• Cultural awareness and sensitivity to gender issues;
• Flexibility.
• Excellent command of oral English.
