Director of Finance and Operations, Rift Valley Institute (London)

The Rift Valley Institute (RVI) seeks a Director of Finance and Operations to join our hard-working management team in London. This key position involves overall responsibility for financial management and general administration of the Institute and its expanding operations in eastern and central Africa. Relevant qualifications and experience at a senior level in a comparable organization are required. Familiarity with the region is a big plus. The post is London-based, with travel to our offices in Nairobi, Juba and the United States.

Regional Director, South Sudan, Sudan & the Great Lakes, Rift Valley Institute (location negotiable)

The Institute seeks an astute and discriminating Regional Director to manage and develop our field-based research and other programmes in the Sudans and the Great Lakes, and extend the Institute’s engagement with local institutions there. This new post requires an outstanding record in fund-raising and field management, experience in proposal-writing,  and a critical, ideas-driven, approach to programme design. Fluency in French and/or Arabic is highly desirable. The post involves extensive travel; country of residence is negotiable.

Editorial and Publications Controller, Rift Valley Institute (London)

The Rift Valley Institute (www.riftvalley.net) has set standards for open-access research and publication in eastern and central Africa for a decade, and is currently expanding into literary publishing and multimedia. The Institute seeks an inspiring and meticulous editor/manager to run our increasingly diverse publishing programme.
The primary responsibility of this new, senior position is to commission content and see it through to publication, online and in print. The post requires proven, hands-on academic-level editing, writing and rewriting skills, IT aptitude, and the ability to motivate and manage consultants, authors, editors, peer-reviewers, translators, designers, cartographers and printers. It entails an inventive, global approach to publication, from print to multimedia, while maintaining quality control across all publishing platforms. The Editorial and Publications Controller will work directly with John Ryle, the RVI’s Executive Director.

 Staff of the RVI are drawn from Europe, Eastern Africa, Asia and the Americas; the Editorial Controller will join a small, genial, hard-working team in London, visiting our East Africa office regularly. An appropriate career background for this post would be in academic publishing and/or social research or high-end journalism. Familiarity with the region, knowledge of French and/or Arabic and experience in fund-raising are powerful advantages.

Education and Training Coordinator, Rift Valley Institute (Nairobi or London)

The Rift Valley Institute (RVI), www.riftvalley.net is an innovative knowledge-based NGO working in eastern and central Africa to connect local knowledge to social and political action. RVI courses have set a gold standard for field training in eastern Africa. The newly-created post of Education and Training Coordinator combines hands-on management of the existing programme with the challenge of devising and running new courses, liaising with local universities and research organizations and developing an on-line learning platform and content for the Institute.
Management experience is essential; teaching experience, fluency in French and a track-record in fund-raising are highly desirable; IT skills and mastery of another language of the region are definite advantages. The post may also include development of RVI’s digital archive programmes (e.g. www.sudanarchive.net).

Finance and Administration Officer, Rift Valley Institute (London)

Staff of the Institute are drawn from the region, from Europe, and from Asia and the Americas. We are seeking a Finance and Administration Officer to join our hard-working London team. The post involves financial record-keeping, assistance to the Director of Finance and the Programme Director, and responsibility for the everyday administration of the London office. An accounting qualification or documented experience is required.

Internships at the Rift Valley Institute (London and Nairobi)

The Rift Valley Institute (RVI), www.riftvalley.net, seeks exceptional graduate-level interns to join our offices in London and Nairobi. RVI Interns work in various fields, depending on aptitude. These may include data management, office administration, research, translation, text editing, online content creation, video editing and event management. Useful qualifications include skills and experience in any of these fields, an interest in eastern or central African affairs and fluency in one or more of the languages of the region. 
The minimum period for an internship is three days a week over two months. Starting dates are in December and January. Interns’ daily travel expenses are covered and lunch is provided in the office.
