Chief of Party - Early grade reading project 2013, Kenya

Chemonics seeks a chief of party for the anticipated USAID-funded TUSOME early grade reading project in Kenya. The project is expected to increase the reading skills of approximately 5.4 million children during the 2014-2017 school years by creating interventions that expand and bring to scale a proven model for improved results in early grade literacy. Specific activities will include the production and distribution of materials, training of nearly 100,000 education personnel, private sector and youth engagement pilot initiatives, and institutional capacity building of Kenyan government officials. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for making a difference in the lives of people around the world. 

Responsibilities include:
  • Overall management and implementation of the project
  • Take a leadership role in coordination among USAID and key stakeholders, especially DFID, and other implementing partners
  • Interact with numerous Kenyan government institutions and senior-level national and country-level government officials
Qualifications: 
  • Advanced degree in education, social sciences, or a relevant field to education programs from an accredited university
  • Minimum 15 years experience managing education programs in developing countries, preferably in the implementation of a national scale-up and coordination of such activities 
  • High level of interpersonal, technical, and analytical skills, including an ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with a broad range of public sector counterparts, donors, and other key stakeholders
  • Capacity to provide overall results-driven project leadership, management, and technical direction
  • Experience in Kenya or East Africa highly desired
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity 
  • English fluency required
