Finance Officer

by Unknown  |  at  3:43 AM

Who we are
Komaza is revolutionizing African forestry by unlocking the potential for small farmers to serve booming wood markets. With roots in San Francisco and headquarters in coastal Kenya, we have planted over 2 million trees with more than 6,000 farmers, making us Kenya’s largest commercial tree planter. By leveraging farmers’ contribution of land and labor, Komaza can access effectively limitless land and establish a hectare of trees for far less than big plantations – a powerful disruption to the traditional forestry model. We have been recognized with numerous awards and investments, including Forbes, Ashoka, Mulago Foundation, and Novastar Ventures.
About the team
The Komaza Finance & Admin team is a critical service center for the organization. We are meticulous, detail-oriented doers, who know how to balance sustainable, scalable systems with urgent, high priority demands. Though an internal facing department, we take a customer service-centered approach to meeting the needs of the company so Komaza can thrive.

You must be both high-energy and meticulously detail-oriented, driven to constantly create new systems and improve existing ones in pursuit of ever increasing efficiency and air-tight controls against leakage and fraud. We are seeking a candidate who is passionate about our social mission, while also comfortable with the aggressive timelines and scrappy demands of a high-growth start-up.
What you will do
  • Work with the Komaza Senior Leadership Team to ensure timely preparation of project, department & organization budgets.
  • Prepare department spending reports at the end of each month with budget variance analysis.
  • Support all activities related to the validation of our financial statements, including monthly asset balance reconciliation, general ledger review, and adjusting journals for accruals or prepaid expenses.
  • Run point on outstanding payments in accounts receivables and accounts payables at the end of each month.
  • Create internal financial reports, including monthly summaries of farmer payments, tree sales, and harvest inventories.
  • Prepare donor financial reports for periodic reporting as well as donor proposals.
  • Support all annual audit & statutory reporting activities, including preparation of financial schedules & reports.
  • Train the broader staff at Komaza headquarters regarding adherence to Komaza finance systems and codes.
What you have
  • Bachelor's degree in relevant field
  • CPA or its equivalent
  • 3+ years relevant experience including extensive experience in management & external financial report preparation, monitoring dynamic budgets & budget variances, as well as working payroll packages
  • Experience working with MIS tools such as Quick-books
  • Supreme organisational, critical thinking, and communications skills with impeccable spoken and written English
  • Passion for Komaza’s mission to lift rural farmers out of poverty through the rapid scaling of our microforestry model
You’re also
  • Flexible and scrappy with the drive to do whatever necessary to get the job done
  • Self-directed and intellectually curious - you know how and when to seek feedback in the pursuit of continuous improvement
  • Growth-obsessed with a strong desire for personal development
  • A collaborative problem solver who seeks the opinions of other teammates and departments in the development of creative and sustainable systems
What we expect
You are a good fit for Komaza if you want to make a meaningful commitment to this role for a minimum of 2+ years. This role is based at our headquarters in Kilifi, Kenya. The role offers competitive salary and benefits with potential for further career growth.
