Operations Coordinator (Nursery)
Who we are
Komaza is revolutionizing African forestry by unlocking the potential for small farmers to serve booming wood markets. With roots in San Francisco and headquarters in coastal Kenya, we have planted over 2 million trees with more than 6,000 farmers, making us Kenya’s largest commercial tree planter. By leveraging farmers’ contribution of land and labor, Komaza can access effectively limitless land and establish a hectare of trees for far less than big plantations – a powerful disruption to the traditional forestry model. We have been recognized with numerous awards and investments, including Forbes, Ashoka, Mulago Foundation, and Novastar Ventures.
About the team
The Komaza Nursery is a fast-paced team, responsible for growing and delivering a million seedlings each planting season. In order to hit these ambitious targets, we are composed of eager, self-driven, and detail-oriented teammates – who care as much about strictly following protocols as we do about hitting our numbers. As the result of this hard work and rapid growth, we have become one of Kenya’s largest producers of Eucalyptus seedlings, and the world’s largest and most successful Melia nursery.
About this role
As Operations Coordinator (Nursery), you will be at the helm of ensuring efficient achievement of our operational goals. This role does not require technical nursery expertise (we already have these skills in-house); instead, we are hiring a generalist operations manager to support the complex people and process management required for our growing nursery operation. The ideal candidate will thrive on detailed, but fast-paced work, providing a scrappy, can-do attitude in the face of challenging deadlines. You must always be willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, and seek opportunities for continuous improvement and grow rapidly with the team as we face rapid scaling of our operations. This role reports to Komaza’s Nursery Director.
What you will do
- Lead Nursery operations by developing work plans, supervising facility and equipment maintenance, and reviewing team performance.
- Ensure strict adherence to set regulatory quality, health and safety standards.
- Oversee financial management, including diligent maintenance of budgets and financial records.
- Manage timely inputs requisition and meticulous stock records, ensuring compliance to stock control measures to check against pilferage and misuse.
- Lead Nursery human resources, including team motivation, liaising with HQ office on disciplinary issues, casuals work output data, and new staff requisitions.
- Coordinate and support field operations in seedlings distribution logistics planning and execution.
- Seek opportunities for increasing logistics productivity, including analysis of seedling packaging and delivery, as well as feedback from field extension agents.
What you have
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- 5+ years’ experience in managing complex operations (Business Administration or Project management).
- Passion for Komaza’s mission to lift rural farmers out of poverty through the rapid scaling of our microforestry model
- Strong familiarity with the communities where we plant; you have lived or worked in rural low-income communities
- Supreme organisational, critical thinking, and communications skills with impeccable spoken and written English
You’re also
- Flexible and scrappy with the drive to do whatever necessary to get the job done
- Self-directed and intellectually curious - you know how and when to seek feedback in the pursuit of continuous improvement
- Growth-obsessed with a strong desire for personal development
- A collaborative problem solver who seeks the opinions of other teammates and departments in the development of creative and sustainable systems
What we expect
You are a good fit for Komaza if you want to make a meaningful commitment to this role for a minimum of 2+ years. This role is based at our nursery, which is currently located in Ganze town, Kilifi County. The role offers competitive salary and benefits with potential for further career growth.
