Position Description:
Heshima Kenya is a non-governmental organization based in Nairobi, Kenya dedicated to identifying, protecting and empowering unaccompanied refugee minors, especially adolescent girls, through our specialized shelter, education and advocacy programs. Heshima Kenya’s Outreach program has been working to strengthen local networks by promoting awareness and education about gender-based violence prevention and response mechanisms to refugee women and men. In this project Heshima Kenya proposes to provide grants to refugee women to strengthen/begin their own businesses. The Assistant Business Support Officer’s role will be to visit with refugee women grant recipients in the community to help build/strengthen their businesses, help them deal with unique business challenges experienced by refugees, and set them up for long-term economic empowerment and success.
The Assistant Business Support Officer will work closely with Outreach Coordinator and the Advocacy Officer to better advance economic empowerment of refugee women and the quality of life of the program beneficiaries. S/he will also work in coordination with the Outreach team and other programs in Heshima Kenya.
Responsibilities:
- Provide technical support in assessing the submitted business plans and proposals from clients for their viability before micro grants are disbursed and recommending approval for proposals those meeting the set criteria.
- Provides technical support to clients to improve on their business plans and proposals for viability.
- Ensure grant applications are complete, accurate, properly supported and are in accordance with relevant financial rules, regulations and procedures with adequate budget provisions.
- Design grant control systems, procedures and standards within the Project.
- Supervise, implement and administer approved grant in compliance with the donor requirements.
- Monitor and stay abreast of business activities within the project, making recommendations for improvement and development where necessary.
- Support the clients in resolving the challenges they encounter in managing their businesses.
- Work with beneficiaries to identify their financial goals and find ways of reaching their projected financial goals.
- Compute payment schedules and submit applications to the Director of Financial Operations for verification and approval.
- Follow up grant repayments from the existing beneficiaries.
- Maintain documents for the project.
- Work in collaboration with the Outreach Coordinator and the Advocacy Officer to support Monitoring and Evaluation and reporting for the Heshima project, including creating tools to track individual progress and impact.
- Document and promote learning, feedback and knowledge sharing on results and lessons learned, as basis for decision-making on policies, strategies, program management, and projects and so to improve knowledge and performance.
- Write reports for Heshima Kenya that ultimately addresses best practices, challenges, and lessons learned.
- Establish procedures and guidelines to monitor and evaluate the progress and impact of economic development support work including setting and measuring benchmarks along results chains.
- Analyze project implementation strategies to identify constraints to program success and provide timely recommendations.
- Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to Heshima Kenya and to not jeopardize its humanitarian mission.
- Perform any other professional duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements:
- University degree in Business Administration, Commerce, Economics, Entrepreneurship or a related field and at least 3 years of practical experience in SMEs, micro-credit management.
- At least one year experience working with women groups supporting small businesses
- Willingness to work in the field with minimum supervision.
- Ability to appreciate and work with people of diverse culture.
- Ability to evaluate businesses and business plans
- Skills in networking, team-working, and community consultations.
- Knowledge in photography and video recording will be an added advantage.
- Good reporting, communication and representation skills
