ILRI Vacancy: National Program Coordinator

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) seeks to recruit a National Program Coordinator who will lead the African Dairy Genetic Gains (ADGG) Technical program implementation and he/she will be the principal point of contact person for the program in Ethiopia
General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.
A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China). www.ilri.org.
African Dairy Genetic Gains (ADGG) is a Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) funded project that looks at strategies to increase potential and realized smallholder dairy productivity in East Africa. This investment is expected to complement and strengthen the ongoing East African Dairy Development (EADD) program, and will leverage the various on-going country based dairy improvement investments such as the Agricultural Technology Transfer Project in Tanzania, dairy projects in collaboration with or led by the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV) – and Heifer International in Tanzania, and Ethiopia; the Natural Resources Institute Finland (LUKE) funded project in Ethiopia; the World Bank funded East Africa Agriculture Productivity Project in, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda as well as the farmer information and producer network of more than 200,000 farmers
Main duties & responsibilities:
  • In close liaison with the Country Principal Investigator (PI), lead the Technical program implementation in Ethiopia and be accountable to the Program’s Principal Investigator (PI);
  • Assist the Pl to ensure the effective and flexible coordination and implementation of ADGG in Ethiopia;
  • Supervise, mentor and support the program Site Coordinators (SCs);
  • Coordinate and undertake joint related ADGG /private-public Partnership for Artificial Insemination Delivery (PAID) program activities in Ethiopia by working closely with the ADGG program Partners and the two Program PIs, thus providing the needed closer links between the two programs;
  • Undertake the day-to-day management of program activities;
  • With the full knowledge of the Program’s Principal Investigator (PI) and Country PI, maintain regular and effective communication between the ADGG / PAID – Ethiopia team and the ILRI project team to ensure the quality and timeliness of project deliverables;
  • Observing the project schedules and timescales, liaise with the country Pl and ILRI to ensure documents (financial, technical and meeting report, and feedbacks) are prepared in accordance with the agreed schedules and within timescales;
  • Coordinate the preparation of timely and quality documentation / implementation reports to be submitted to ILRI; including contributing to the packaging of feedbacks to farmers;
  • Maintain records on technical and financial aspects of project operation, including project activities and their outcomes; as well as minutes, decisions and recommendations of meetings and workshops;
  • Ensure that all partners, beneficiaries, and stakeholders are appropriately and timely informed and involved in the program activities;
  • Provide excellent service to all stakeholders working within the program by being proactive, responsive and effectively dealing with program related concerns / issues;
  • Ensure effective dissemination of knowledge and insights gained; learnings as well as tools and methodologies to approved program stakeholders and wider audience;
  • Identify potential related activities to which the planned program activities would be synergistic to, and communicates / share with the Program Management Team (PMT) for further action.
Minimum Requirement:
Education:
  • MSc degree in Animal Genetics and Breeding with several years of practical experience in field implementation of breeding programs
Experience:
  • At least 5 years of relevant work experience.
Skills:
  • Advanced knowledge of relevant administrative and/or operating protocols and policies of the function,
  • Possess basic managerial competence,
  • Proficiency in English, with excellent written / oral communication, presentation, and negotiation skills,
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite and advanced internet skills,
  • High level of cultural sensitivity to understand the needs of all staff and partners,
  • High level of responsibility and discretion and ability to work under pressure,
  • Effective team leadership.                             
Training:
  • Project Management Software (MS Project, PMP or similar) – PMP Certification. 
Citizenship:
  • Preferably be an Ethiopian
Duty Station:  Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Job level:   3B. 
Monthly Base Salary: Birr 38,223 (Negotiable depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
The ILRI Addis campus is set in a secure, attractive campus with dining and sports facilities that are located on site.
