Psychosocial Counselor

The Center for Victims of Torture works toward a future in which torture ceases to exist and its victims have hope for a new life. We are an international nonprofit dedicated to healing survivors of torture. We provide direct care for those who have been tortured, train partners around the world who can prevent and treat torture, and advocate for human rights and an end to torture. We are headquartered in Minnesota with offices in Africa and the Middle East. In Kenya we have offices and clinics in Nairobi and Dadaab.
Position Summary
The Center for Victims of Torture is seeking Psychosocial Counselor to work with refugee population who have suffered torture and war trauma. The position will assess and provide comprehensive psychological treatment including individual and group therapy with adults and children who are survivors of torture. The position has a one-year renewable agreement. The position will begin on 17th October 2016.
Position: Psychosocial Counselor
Location: Nairobi Kenya
Reports to: Hierarchically to Psychotherapist-Trainer
Functionally to the Counseling Supervisor.
Essential functions include [but are not limited to]:
§ Render psycho-social services to individuals, groups and communities to assist them to recover from the effects of torture and war trauma: providing comprehensive psychosocial support particularly by group and individual therapy, as well as conduct evaluations, case management and clinical protocols as needed. Also, provide interpretation between clients or CVT staff when needed.
§ Develop the community’s awareness, understanding and engagement with the issues relating to mental health, war trauma, and torture: Assist in planning and implementing programs and campaigns directed to sensitize and arise awareness in the core issues of the Organization.
§ Make the CVT services known and accessible to people whose psycho-social functioning has been impaired by their experiences of torture and war trauma: liaise with other organizations, operate the referral system and identify new clients from the target communities.
§ Train role players and community members in basic trauma and mental health issues: Assisting in the design, plan and implementation of other agencies training.
§ Promote Self-care through Support and Supervision and submit all the documentation needed for the practice.
§ Assist with any other related activities as deemed necessary by your supervisors.
Qualifications:
§ Advanced degree in Psychology, Counseling or related field. Master’s degree or equivalent is desired.
§ Extensive experience providing psychotherapy to individuals and groups.
§ Understanding of and experience implementing culturally appropriate mental health interventions, including individual, group and community-based approaches for people who have suffered torture and trauma. Experience with gender-based violence highly desirable.
§ Flexibility and adaptability.
§ Ability to travel within Nairobi to communities.
§ Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements and needs.
§ Skilled at working as a member of a team.
§ Working knowledge of English and Swahili
§ Working knowledge of other relevant languages such as French, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda, Nyamulenge, Somali, Oromo or Dinka is highly desirable.
