Advocacy and Protection Intern -Kenya

The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization with 60 years of experience in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.
The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 5000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs
Are you a young and aspiring influencer, humanitarian advocate with a degree in Social Sciences, Law, Political Science, Development or Humanitarian Studies? Are you genuinely interested in changing the lives of refugees and displaced persons in humanitarian settings within the Horn of Africa Region? Do you wish to build your skills in advocacy and lobbying, protection, policy analysis, reviews, media and communications? Are you a go-getter and committed to learning on the job? We are looking for you!
NRC is pleased to offer a six month internship to the qualifying candidate, based at the NRC Regional Office, Nairobi. If you are interested and meet the requirements outlined below, kindly submit your application to us.
NRC advocates on local, national, regional and global levels for the rights of displaced and vulnerable people. In the Horn of Africa Region, NRC aims to use the evidence generated from its programme activities to facilitate evidence based advocacy work, aimed at influencing sustainable, durable changes at policy and practice levels. To this, end, NRC is committed to empowering young Kenyan graduates with skills that will enhance their advocacy and influencing career.

Job description

Deliverables:
  • Monitor, analyze and synthesize developments, press clippings and reports with regards to Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Yemen and Eritrea;
  • Research, collect, analyze and edit information related to evidence of sustained returns in the Voluntary Kenya-Somalia Returns programme;
  • Develop a policy brief with review of practices in Kenya and Somalia in relation to the sustainable returns for refugees;
  • Support protection analysis at Dadaab Refugee Camp where NRC is operational to collect first-hand information in relation to the returns;
  • Perform other duties as required.
Learning opportunities for the intern:
  • General understanding of the work and mission of NRC Programme work in the region;
  • Become familiar with working in an international, humanitarian organization and in a multi-cultural setting;
  • Opportunity to work with the Advocacy and Media team in developing messages, reports, briefs;
  • Opportunity to assess current policies and practices related to humanitarian work and linkages to development processes;
  • Networking within the humanitarian sector;

Qualifications

  • A Kenyan Citizen
  • First Degree in Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Law, Development or Humanitarian Studies

Education field

  • Social sciense

Personal qualities

  • Excellent analytical and report writing skills
  • Ability to develop basic briefs on humanitarian situations in the Horn of Africa region
  • Good oral and written communications skills
  • Demonstrated research abilities and interest
  • Internet proficiency as well as proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • English

We offer

  • Duty station: Nairobi
  • Contract commencement is early February 2016 until end of July 2016.
  • Salary/benefits: According to NRC’s general directions, The candidate will observe NRC’s code of conduct and working hours for the NRC Office in Nairobi.
