Christian Aid's Programme Communications Team helps to build the organisation's profile and visibility with institutional donors and other important stakeholders , share learning and good practice on key development themes across the sector, and creatively communicate results and achievements from some of our most innovative, impactful and wide-reaching programmes.
Our work is key to better positioning Christian Aid to influence decision makers and donors with the objective of diversifying and increasing funding. This includes improving how Christian Aid communicates with stakeholders in the countries where we work and around the world, including partners, alliances and consortia, the global development sector, private sector, institutional donors, high net worth individuals and trusts.
We support donor funded programmes, service contracts and country programmes to develop communications strategies and plans. This includes identifying communications objectives and key audiences, developing programme identities and messaging frameworks and drafting comms plan budgets.
We also provide day-to-day hands-on support in the delivery of a wide range of communications activities including publications, audiovisual materials, events, media relations, participatory communications projects, digital communications and social media, communicating learning and results, and internal communications.
About the role
The Programme Communications Manager is responsible for the development and execution of strategic programme communications, with oversight of communications activities and budget across a portfolio of large donor funded programmes. The Programme Communications Manager provides central strategic and hands-on marketing communications support to assist programme teams to develop local marketing and visibility plans, assisting them, as appropriate, in the development of local collateral and activities which are consistent with the Christian Aid brand. This can include assisting with the analysis and commissioning of capacity building activities; media and digital plans, events and campaigns, and innovative and participatory communications projects. Throughout, all communications should reflect the impact and role of Christian Aid as accurately as possible.
This role ensures that we meet the visibility commitments made to institutional donors. S/he provides communications input and support for new bids and tenders where communications is of strategic importance to the programme design.
The post holder works with colleagues internationally to deliver ambitious and fast-moving communications plans and initiatives ensuring that Christian Aid programmes working internationally are able communicate effectively with key stakeholders.
S/he is a member of cross-organisational project teams and working groups, providing strategic and practical communications advice and input.
Absence cover
The post holder deputises for the Programme Communications Lead when required and provides absence cover when needed for urgent tasks which would otherwise be undertaken by other team members.
Overseas travel
The Programme Communications Manager is expected to be willing and available to travel to areas of instability. Overseas travel is not expected to exceed 40 days in any one year and can be much less than this in years where there is a limited travel requirement or other corporate priorities.
About you
You will be someone with substantial experience in brand management, marketing communications and in developing and executing multi-discipline communications strategies.
You will have an excellent understanding of the development sector, its issues and challenges, as well as NGO audiences and funders, and the issues that they respond and relate to. You will have a sound understanding of international current affairs.
You will know how to work with, coach and influence colleagues across a large or complex organisation and have a proven ability to project manage multiple communication outputs.
You will be self-motivated, resilient and persistent, exhibiting high levels of confidence, able to cope with criticism and demonstrating an ability to work calmly under pressure and to deadline while remaining respectful to the work, deadlines and targets of others.
