Sanivation is a company on the front line of developing new technology and business models for the provision of sustainable sanitation services for refugees and the urban poor. We are one of the first organizations to deploy a solution that addresses the entire sanitation chain in refugee camp settings. We are also pioneering a 100% business driven approach to sanitation services and delivering an in- demand waste product in the form of biomass fuel briquettes.
Work still needs to be done as we evaluate our current processes, and design better, more effective methods of sanitation services. We are designing for scale, and we’re beginning to replicate our work in urban communities and refugee camps.
Position description:
Sanivation has been selected by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to implement and conduct operational research on a Waste to Value (WTV) sanitation approach in Kakuma refugee camp. The project is intended to validate both, operational and financial sustainability of such approach, and if successful lead the way for subsequent replicability of Waste to Value solutions in other refugee camps.
The Interaction Designer will be in charge of the entire lifecycle of client satisfaction and impact assessment from design through extended use. This will include both of our client-facing products and services, toilets and fuel. The consultant will help guide the selection and implementation of the chosen (WTV) sanitation model, monitor user acceptance, collaborate with the logistics and technical leads to improve the implemented service and technology, and oversee the impact evaluation of our services. The position requires a robust understanding of human-centered design along with strong interviewing, designing and prototyping skills, and qualitative and quantitative evaluation experience. The chosen candidate will be passionate about improving the living conditions of refugees worldwide. The position has a total duration of 9 months and it’s based full time in Kakuma refugee camp. As Sanivation grows and with mutual interest you may be asked to stay on longer for a continual growth of our services.
Key responsibilities:
Qualitative analysis
· Define selection criteria for area of project implementation, participant users and control group
· Lead focus group discussions and interview relevant stakeholders including refugees, WASH officers, and community representatives to understand their preferences, needs and constraints
· Identify what needs Sanivation can meet both with its current model and with small modifications
· Assessment of toilet technologies readily available
Prototyping
· Create low-fidelity prototypes to test new ideas on a small scale
· Collaborate with technical and logistics consultants to create on the fly improvements to the implemented sanitation system, technology and reuse product based on customer discovery findings
· Conduct rapid user trials
M&E and Impact Assessment
· Creation and implementation of baseline survey with selected population and control group
· Continuous monitoring of user acceptance of the implemented sanitation service, technology and reuse product and optimization based on customer feedback
· End of project impact assessment
· Clearly communicate key learnings and options to other Sanivation staff
Team management
· Recruitment and training of refugee incentive staff
· Continuous capacity building of incentive refugee staff to allow local management of operations
· Regularly reporting on the implementation of services though a phased reporting framework
Skills and experience you need:
· Individual interviewing and focus group discussions experience, preferably around sensitive subjects
· Understanding of the sanitation space. Experience with sanitation technologies in humanitarian settings is desirable
· Basic prototyping skills
· Bachelor’s degree in product design, business, anthropology, sociology, or any field with significant qualitative and design experience. Masters degree is preferred
· Independent, self-motivated work ethic. This role will not be babysat. We decide on quarterly goals and have our leads decide the best methods for reaching those goals. At minimum there will be weekly check in meetings
· Flexibility. We need someone able and willing to work with the flow, to step up to new activities and responsibilities that may not fall with-in their comfort level
· Communication skills. This role will need to clearly present findings and recommendations for chosen processes as well as be able to work with an international team of various backgrounds
· Strong proficiency in Microsoft office suite, particularly with template reporting, is required
· A strong understanding of human centered design is required, experience implementing a human centered design approach is desirable
· Enthusiastic about living and working in Kakuma refugee camp in hot desert conditions.
· Proficiency in Swahili and working in refugee camp settings is desirable
