Background / General description:
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, is one of the leading investors and lenders in emerging markets. The mission of IFC is to promote sustainable private sector investment in developing countries, helping to reduce poverty and improve people's lives. IFC finances private sector investments in the developing world, mobilizes capital in the international financial markets, helps clients improve social and environmental sustainability, and provides technical assistance and advice to governments and businesses. The development of infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa is a top strategic priority for IFC and for the international development community.



IFC is seeking to recruit Investment Officers to support the development, execution and monitoring of investments for its Infrastructure Group in the Africa region. This group is responsible for sourcing and executing investment transactions in power, transport, and utilities in the Africa region. 

Depending on their profile, Investment Officers may be partially dedicated to IFC Infraventures, an equity fund established by IFC to provide risk capital and expertise for the early stage development of infrastructure projects.

IFC is today a leader in this area and seeks to substantially expand its activities in the region in these sectors. The position provides an opportunity to obtain company, project and sector experience in a specialized, growing and high impact area. Some travel in the region will be required.

The position(s) are to be based in Nairobi, Kenya or Johannesburg, South Africa, and possibly in Dakar, Senegal or Washington, D.C. Please indicate in your application your preferred duty station(s).

Note: If the selected candidate is a current Bank Group staff member with a Regular or Open-Ended appointment, s/he will retain his/her Regular or Open-Ended appointment. All others will be offered a 3 year term appointment.
Duties and Accountabilities:
The responsibilities of the Investment Officers include but are not limited to:

- Work with colleagues to develop a strong pipeline of good investment opportunities in infrastructure in Sub-Saharan Africa;

- Evaluate, structure, negotiate and close new investment transactions;

- Execute IFC s project development investments with a strong focus on achieving bankable projects; 

- Develop innovative and appropriate financial structures for investment transactions;

- Coordinate closely with environmental and social colleagues to ensure the maintenance of high environmental and social standards in IFC’s investment;

- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing and prospective clients;

- Work closely with IFC’s external partners in infrastructure in the region; and

- Cooperate with a range of industry and regional IFC colleagues.
Selection Criteria:
- MBA or equivalent degree;

- At least 4-8 years of finance experience, and a proven track record in originating, structuring and closing transactions;

- Knowledge of the infrastructure sectors, ideally in emerging markets;

- Experience in project development a plus;

- Strong financial and credit skills; demonstrated ability to structure a variety of financial instruments;

- Business development and client relationship skills, track record and ability to focus on client needs effectively;

- Strong interpersonal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds;

- Commitment to the World Bank Group and IFC’s mission, strategy and values;

- Motivation to support development in Sub-Saharan Africa;

- Results oriented and strong client focus; and

- Excellent communication skills in English, other language skills an advantage.
