****Duties and Responsibilities****
Under the guidance and direction of the Team leader , The Protection Officer substantially contributes to the effective management of LWF Protection and Peace Building activities and ensure that the implementation of Protection related activities and data collection reports, in accordance with established LWF South Sudan guidelines and procedures, preparation and maintenance of the Project effectively and efficiently.
****Reporting & Communication lines:**** The Protection officer shall report to the DM or the person designated by him or her under the overall leadership of the Area Coordinator. The Protection officer shall maintain communication lines with the project assistants, other Project officers , Development Manager, Finance Officer, Logistics and Administration Officer and other staff in Jonglei.
****Duty station:**** Panyagor , Jonglei State, South Sudan with travel to other project sites when need arises.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for the implementation of the protection elements of both emergency projects in accordance with approved time schedules, budgets and LWF & donor regulations.
- Supervise the Protection Project assistants and ensure the Project assistant prepare and follow weekly and monthly work plans
- In collaboration with EM plan and carry out training workshops on protection for the target beneficiaries.
- To assist with other technical trainings as identified by the needs of beneficiaries.
- Conduct participatory needs assessments and identify issues affecting protection operations for emergency projects in the project area as organized by relevant agencies.
- Organize, plan and manage the targeting of beneficiaries for the protection interventions.
- Participate in a Peace Building and Conflict needs assessments / surveys
- In consultation with the EM design and implement Peace Building and conflict mitigation initiatives through sports, cultural events, workshops and other appropriate initiatives.
- Promote a debates on harmful traditional practices especially on women and children through awareness-raising, lobby and advocacy
- Train local government, traditional leaders and partner NGOs in conflict resolution and rule of law
- Develop regular monthly, quarterly and annual implementation plans and report
- Support the development of a peace building network in liaison with Local Churches, traditional Leaders, local government, civil society organizations and other NGOs.
- Build the capacity of the County Peace Desk in the project area to develop / strengthen their capacities for improved peace and conflict interventions
- Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual operational plans of protection activities
- In collaboration with the County Peace Desk, promote the rights of women and children in the project area.
- Document case studies, best practices and lessons leant from each of the activities implemented as per the approved log frames.
- Coordinate with logistics staff for supplies to the project area for protection related activities.
- Represent LWF and liaise with County government, partners and local community at county/project coordination meetings and workshops
- Undertake continuous monitoring visits to all the beneficiaries and develop innovative ideas that will inform development of projects in future
- Work closely with other PO to implement and promote protection activities in project area.
- Any other duties as may be assigned by the EM or the person designated by him or her
****Minimum Qualifications and Personal Specification:****
- At least Diploma in Conflict Resolution/ Conflict Transformation/ Conflict Management/ Political Science/International Relations or related fields with a particular emphasis on capacity building skills.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in implementing Protection activities in emergency context in the NGO
- Demonstrated understanding of community engagement/participatory planning and facilitation techniques.
- Demonstrated experience in project assessments, data collection, analysis and report writing.
- Sound understanding of project management cycle, humanitarian principles and standards including SPHERE, HAP and the Code of Conduct
- Computer literacy with knowledge of office applications, internet and email
- Willingness to travel for most of the time depending on emergency situations and to live/work in remote locations with very basic conditions.
- Ability to meet deadlines and if necessary work for long hours when deadlines are tight
- Excellent in written and spoken English. Knowledge of local language in the project area will be an added advantage
