The Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD) is a private diplomacy organisation founded on the principles of humanity, impartiality and independence. Its mission is to help prevent, mitigate, and resolve armed conflict through dialogue and mediation.
HD is looking for a:
Project Manager, Sudan and South Sudan
(Based in Nairobi, Starting date: 1 August 2016)
Reporting to the Africa Regional Director, the successful candidate will oversee HD’s work in Sudan and South Sudan. In particular, s/he will:
- Develop the overall strategy for the Sudan and South Sudan projects in consultation with the Africa Regional Director, and maintain a strong analysis of the political context in both countries;
- Oversee implementation of project activities including budget oversight, compliance, and donor reporting;
- Supervise project-related staff and consultants, and liaise with the Regional Director, key corporate services staff, including the Office Administration and Accounting Manager in Nairobi, and the finance and HR departments at HD’s head office in Geneva, Switzerland;
- Oversee and implement fundraising activities for the two projects, including development of project proposals and engaging with potential donors;
- Liaise regularly with key interlocutors in both countries and in the region, with government and opposition group representatives, as well as key international actors;
- Contribute to other lines of HD’s work when and as needed.
Required qualifications:
- Extensive knowledge and experience of international peace and security issues, e.g. conflict mediation, the role of the United Nations and the African Union;
- 7 to 15 years work experience in an international environment, with an emphasis on the Horn of Africa and Sudan and/or South Sudan;
- An in-depth knowledge of African political affairs and significant professional experience in Sudan and/or South Sudan;
- Experience in building and managing relationships with a range of actors, including governments, inter-governmental bodies, and non-state actors, as well as in engaging in high-level gatherings;
- Astute in political analysis;
- Proven experience of project management and development, as well as fundraising;
- Experience in managing, and working as part of, a team;
- A Master’s degree in conflict resolution/political science/development studies or a related field would be considered an asset.
In addition, the successful applicant should:
- Be proactive and highly-motivated, with a strong sense of initiative and creativity;
- Have the capacity to plan and manage several projects simultaneously and independently in a fast-paced environment, keeping a keen attention to details;
- Demonstrate flexibility and resourcefulness in finding solutions to unexpected problems as well as an ability to cope with pressure;
- Have a good judgment and be discrete in handling sensitive information;
- Have excellent diplomatic, interpersonal and communication skills as well as the ability to work well with high-level personalities in sensitive environments and high stress situations;
- Have strong abilities to work in an inter-cultural environment, either independently or as part of a team.
