Position Purpose
This position is responsible for ability in teaching all upper primary classes from Standard 4 through Standard 8. This position is also responsible for participating in a staff that ensures proper communication, policy compliance and transparency.
Supervision
This position reports directly to the Hamomi Children’s Centre Executive Director, currently Joy Nafungo acting as Deputy Manager.
Essential Duties
- Manage classroom and children to follow syllabus, create schemes of work and plan lessons.
- Report on time and teach classes as scheduled time.
- Mark papers and exams in a timely manner, and record exam scores.
- Attend staff workshops and help to develop, participate and encourage an environment of teamwork and transparency.
- Ensure classroom is tidy, organized and stocked, help to develop centre where there are limitations on materials through communication with staff and supervisor.
- Taking initiative to make good use of materials around the centre to create a better teaching environment for students.
Qualifications
Education:
· P1 Required
· Diploma in Education or Degree in Education is added advantage
Knowledge/Skills:
- Excellent skills working with children and in classroom management
- Basic computer skills
- Excellent communication skills, both oral and written in English and Kiswahili.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills, including in cross-cultural settings.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand, process, and document information.
Abilities:
A Hamomi Children’s Centre Lower Primary Teacher must have the ability to:
- communicate effectively orally, in writing, and visually;
- maintain classroom tidiness, order and schedule;
- maintain discipline and administer punishments for bad behavior without the use of corporal punishment;
- use wide variety of teaching tactics and tools, not simply rote use of chalkboard;
- interpret and apply good HR practice and principles with good judgment;
- work as a member of a team in a multi-cultural environment;
- maintain high performance standard with attention to detail;
- follow instructions from management;
- ask questions when rules, regulation or advisement is unclear;
- conduct oneself in a professional and courteous manner to represent the best interests of the Hamomi.
Working Conditions:** This position requires sitting, standing, walking, handling objects (manual dexterity), reaching above shoulder level, using fine finger movements and lifting/carrying light loads. Hamomi Children’s Centre conditions are in the Kangemi slum within a dusty environment and temporary structures.
