1. Position Summary
INSO Somalia seeks to recruit a Senior Analyst to join its head office in Nairobi. The main purpose of this position is to:
- Cross-check reports submitted by INSO field officers in Somalia, and complete them by gathering information from other sources, including trips to Somalia.
- Write and/or edit reports on specific issues and themes, as requested by the unit’s head.
- Provide tailored advice to INSO Somalia’s partners on safety and access issues.
2. About INSO
INSO Somalia, formerly known as NSP, is an international NGO that seeks to address the growing challenge of safety in the NGO community in Somalia through the provision of specialized, coordinated and focused safety management support. It recognizes the insecure operating environment all NGOs face in Somalia and the collective value of enhancing safety preparedness and support. The project provides the NGO community with its own safety focal point and tailored safety support services through 3 main services: Research & Analysis (provision of regular reports, safety risk assessments and briefings); Capacity building (provision of various trainings); and Response (provision of support to crisis management in response to critical incidents).
INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of services including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety-related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff operations and training. INSO services help NGOs with their day-to-day risk management responsibilities and improve overall situational awareness to support evidence-based humanitarian access decisions.

3. Hierarchy
Reports to the Deputy Director, Head of Research & Analysis (hereinafter the ‘line manager’).
4. Key responsibilities
(The list of responsibilities is not exhaustive: other tasks may be requested to adapt to operational needs)
> Data Gathering and Analysis
- Process, edit and analyse complex information for the production of security reports
- Liaise with field officers in Somalia for confirmation and verification of reports
- Ensure information collected is cross-checked, credible and timely
- Pro-actively collect information relevant to NGOs safety and security. Monitor all major Somalia news websites to capture all security incidents which will affect NGOs directly or indirectly
- Report immediately to the line manager any security incident concerning NGOs or other breaking news
> Reporting
- In coordination with other team members and under the direction of the line manager, prepare (and/or review) daily, bi-weekly, quarterly and special reports, area briefs, advisories and field assessments.
- Proof-read reports, and ensure that reports are of high quality and compliant with INSO standards in terms of content, style and formatting.
- Ensure a high confidentiality of requests and reports
> Advice and Representation
- Handle information requests from INSO partners, providing tailored advice to them on safety and access issues, either verbally or written
- Participate in the briefing and/or training of NGOs
- Assist NGOs in need (evacuation, crisis management) as required
- On the line manager’s request, participate in official meetings (Authorities, UN, NGOs)
> Others
As a member of the Research and Analysis team, when required, the Senior Analyst will support the other team members and field staff in their daily tasks, upon request from his/her line manager. This includes – but is not limited to:
- Mentor and support the more junior members of the Research and Analysis team, helping in their professional development
- Participate in field trips/assessments after validation of the line manager
- Travel to Somalia (security permitting) to train field based staff
- Participate in efforts by INSO management to recalibrate objectives and improve service delivery
5. Posting details
- This position is Nairobi-based with frequent travel (50 %) to Somalia. Somalia is a hazardous environment and the candidate must accept to travel widely through Somalia, at short notice (but with due regard to the security situation)
- The position requires the holder to be able to work effectively and efficiently unsupervised. The selected candidate must be able to plan and manage their own time effectively. The holder must exercise a strong work ethic and take responsibility for his/her own actions
- This position requires a high degree of flexibility with respect to working hours (with a compensatory time off mechanism)
6. Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in Journalism, Political Sciences, History, Anthropology or other Social Sciences preferred
- Candidates having a strong journalistic background, demonstrated analytical skills, and experience specific to Somalia are invited to apply
- Previous experience with NGOs or UN humanitarian agencies in Somalia is an advantage
- 10 years of work experience in positions requiring high levels of decision making, analysis and writing
- The candidate must be able to function autonomously, with common sense and personal discipline

- Ability to interact positively with Somalis of different backgrounds
- Quick problem-solving skills when confronted with a complex situation
- Ability to source, verify, judge and analyse information
- Ease at writing well-researched, well-structured and analytically sound reports
> Languages
- English (working language): fluent with excellent writing capacities
- Somali (working language): mother tongue
> Computer skills
- Good knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Internet, Google Earth
8. Salary, conditions and commencement date
- The successful candidate will be hired on a yearly contract
- Competitive salary, depends on qualifications and experience
