Organizational Setting
Through its Country Offices, or FAO Representations, FAO assists governments to develop policies, programmes and projects to address hunger and malnutrition, and provides technical support for the sustainable development of their agricultural, fisheries and forestry sectors. The activities of the FAO Country Offices include design and implementation of country-tailored field programmes, liaison with local donor representatives, and active public awareness-raising and outreach activities related to FAO initiatives such as the World Food Day.
The post is located in the FAO Representation in Kenya, Nairobi
Reporting Lines
The National Professional Officer (Nutrition) reports to FAO-Representative for Kenya. S/he will work in close collaboration with the Senior Nutrition Officer in RAF, colleagues in FAO Kenya, Nutrition Division at HQs (ESN), REAO, and when appropriate, relevant sub-regional partner organisations.
Technical Focus
Programme development, coordination and operational assistance related to nutrition and based on the knowledge of the local conditions, culture, language and institutions of the country of assignment
Key Results
Effective and efficient coordination and provision of the technical and operational support of the programme and project activities of the FAO Representation.
Key Functions
Provides guidance and technical support in mainstreaming nutrition in all relevant FAO programmes and project.
Supports strengthening technical capacity on nutrition and food security programming to its staff, government staff and partners;
Participates in Kenya and Horn of Africa regional policy and strategy design processes related to food and nutrition security in collaboration with RECs and other national and regional partners to ensure underlying causes of malnutrition related to agriculture are adequately highlighted and addressed;
Participates in and support food and nutrition security coordination mechanism(s) at country level, in particular through the Food Security Nutrition Working Group FSNWG) and other groups based in Nairobi;
Coordinates with partners to provide nutrition updates for the FSNWG monthly presentation and feedback back to countries;
Supports coordination of initiatives of the nutrition sub-group of the FSNWG;
Ensures nutrition is addressed in the agricultural and livestock sub groups of the FSNWG;
Participates in and support IPC Nutrition Analysis in the region;
Supports country-level efforts to improve coordination for food and nutrition security;
Facilitates the documentation and sharing of lessons learnt, good practises in Kenya and the region, on nutrition sensitive agriculture and food based approaches to improving nutrition;
Contributes FAO resource mobilisation efforts, with a specific focus on resource mobilisation for nutrition-sensitive food and agriculture programmes and projects;
Contributes to preparation and management of regional programme and projects as required;
Performs other duties as required.
