TRAINERS CHILD TO CHILD METHODOLOGIES AND CHILD PROTECTION

Concern Worldwide is an international non-governmental humanitarian organization dedicated to the reduction of suffering and working towards the ultimate elimination of extreme poverty in the world’s poorest countries.
Expressions of interest are invited for the following consultancy opportunity:
TRAINERS CHILD TO CHILD METHODOLOGIES AND CHILD PROTECTION
BACKGROUND
Concern Worldwide is an international non-governmental organization (INGO) operating in 28 countries in Africa and Asia and has been working with extremely poor in Kenya since 2002. Concern has programmes in five sectors: Education; Emergencies; Nutrition; Food Income and Markets and Advocacy targeting Nairobi slums, and arid and semi-arid regions. Concern Education programme seeks to improve access to quality Free Primary Education for the most vulnerable children by realizing four programme results: Communities demonstrate that they value education and safety of all children; County education structures deliver quality primary education; Improved governance and management of 312 schools and Improved Implementation of Free and Compulsory Primary Education (Education act No.14 of 2013). One of the interventions that contribute to improved value of education and safety of all children is School Child to Child Clubs implemented in 202 primary schools in Nairobi. The 207 clubs have attracted a membership of 8716 children (4763F, 3953M), and are facilitated by 356 champions (190F, 166M) and supported by 202 patrons. It is expected that club members shall acquire life skills; demonstrate ability to better protect themselves; express confidence and aspiration to learn; even as they act as change agents in school and in their communities.
CONSULTANCY OBJECTIVES
The purpose of this consultancy is to equip 202 school patrons with necessary knowledge, skills and tools on Child to child methodology to enable them support club champions and members going forward. It is envisaged that, patrons that clearly understand the methodology will influence inclusion of members so that the most vulnerable are encouraged to join the club as well as girls and boys for equality purposes. This will make the intervention sustainable well after Concern and implementing partners stop supporting the schools.
LOCATION
Nairobi, Kenya
METHODOLOGY
The trainers will adopt participatory approaches during the one day patrons' training to enable the patrons review how they have supported the clubs before, identify gaps and come up with way forward. They will also take cognizant and use adult facilitation techniques in delivery of content to ensure patrons understand in a very simple way how to roll out School child to child clubs, and equips boys and girls with knowledge and ideas in order to make what they do more useful and fun. It is expected that from the training, the trainers shall compile a simple guide that shall detail steps in rolling out child to child methodology, guidance in club membership recruitment to ensure equality and inclusion and stipulate roles of the champions and patrons clearly.
TIMELINE
The engagement entails two (4) working days as detailed below;
  1. One day training of 202 patrons dispersed in nine subcounties between March1st and 4th: Concern implementing partners shall organize six (7) forums as indicated below:
  2. One day training of 40 patrons from Embakasi and Makadara-MSDP to organize
  3. One day training for 70 patrons from Langata, Dagorretti, Westlands and Kasarani: these will be divided into 3 classes to avoid patrons communiting for long distances: one in Kibera, one in Mathare and another in Kawangware-Daraja to organize
  4. One day training for 94 patrons from Kamukunji, Njiru and Starehe: these shall be divided into 3 classes due to large numbers-RIDA to organize
    1. 2 days participation in patrons training and supporting in infusing child to child methodology
    2. One day to compile a simple guide as detailed above and present them in a word document
DELIVERABLES/EXPECTED OUTPUTS
The 7 trainers will be expected to deliver the following outputs:
  • Equip 202 patrons with knowledge and skills on child to child methodology through a one day training
  • Develop a simple guide detailing steps in rolling out child to child methodology, guidance in club membership recruitment to ensure equality and inclusion and stipulate roles of the champions and patrons clearly.
    Any other value-add that the consultant can provide beyond the basic requirements is an added advantage and should be included in the technical proposal.
RENUMERATION
Agreed rates will be based on prevailing market competitive rates and value for money. In full consideration of the services performed by the consultant under the terms of contract, Concern Worldwide shall pay the consultant fees as per an agreed output/deliverables-payment schedule.
The Consultant(s) is not an employee of Concern Worldwide or its affiliates, thus no benefits or compensation are provided as part of this agreement.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The consultant will liaise with the Manager-Education and the Senior Manager-Education based in Nairobi. This liaison shall include conducting spot checks during the trainings to ensure proper content and techniques are used and that training is delivered to all the targeted participants on schedule.
Concern shall organize logistics and provide transport for all the trainers to and from training sites. While in the field, a lead from each implementing partner shall support the trainer and facilitate all processes relating to the training. Nairobi Education manager shall be in charge of all operations and therefore the guide shall be submitted to her. The trainers are not employees of Concern Worldwide or its affiliates, thus no benefits or compensation are provided as part of this agreement.
The consultant will work independently using his/her own laptop and office space.
CONSULTANT’S PROFILE
  1. Degree in Education, Social Work, Child Psychology or Law or other related degree
  2. At least three (3) years relevant professional experience in child to child methodology working in education programmes especially in promoting life skills and child protection in schools. Previous experience of working with schools in the informal settlement setting is an added advantage.
  3. Demonstrable understanding of the needs of girls and most vulnerable children in the Kenyan schools system and experience in developing training materials for teachers
  4. Excellent analytical, problem solving, planning, organization, interpersonal, capacity building, report writing and editorial skills.

  • A technical (indicate earliest date of availability to undertake and complete the assignment) and financial proposal quoted in Kenya Shillings (Kes) for the whole assignment
  • Cover letter and CV (Demonstration of Capability) If quoting for an organization attach the CV of the Lead Consultant and any other personnel to be involved in the assignment
  • A list of previous work done (Work Completion Certificates can be attached) including telephone and email contacts of three (3) referees who can validate technical expertise
