Background:
The Field Epidemiology Society of Kenya (FESK) is conducting a qualitative study among the fishing community around Lake Victoria. This qualitative study will be comprised of focus group discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews (IDIs), and mapping and observation.
The Research Assistant, under the direct supervision of the Program Coordinator and overall supervision of the Director – FELTP, will provide qualitative research support to FESK/UCSF Fisherfolk study.
FESK is seeking qualified research assistants with prior experience in qualitative research to conduct this study.

Specific Tasks:
The selected research assistant will be required to undertake the following tasks:
• Attend the full study training to understand the purpose and intent of the study, as well as the plan for implementation.
• Participate in the study pilot and provide feedback as requested.
• Conduct focus group discussions with the fishing community in the designated sites around Lake Victoria.
• Conduct in-depth interviews with the identified representatives or leaders that are involved in the fishing industry and community in Lake Victoria in western Kenya.
• Transcribe and translate the interviews conducted at the end of each day.
• Respond to questions or address feedback from the national supervision team and/or data analysis team as needed.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

**Minimum Qualifications:*
The selected research assistant will have the following minimum qualifications:
• Fluency in English and Swahili, in addition to either Dholuo or Olunyala
• Experience in conducting FGDs and IDIs for at least two previous qualitative studies
• Experience in translation (from vernacular language to English) and transcription
• Bachelor’s degree in a social science or health-related field
• Knowledge and understanding of public health issues, specifically regarding HIV/AIDS
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work well in diverse team
• Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Word and strong typing skills
• Ability to travel for extended periods of time
• Experience in conducting FGDs and IDIs for at least two previous qualitative studies
