- To support the development of eye health service delivery systems in Eritrea

The Eritrean Ministry of Health, in partnership with The Fred Hollows Foundation, is seeking an ophthalmologist to strengthen the Eritrean eye health service delivery systems. The suitably qualified and experienced person will support district eye health workers to develop their surgical, clinical and management skills as well as complete surgery themselves when required.
The position will play an important role in the Eritrean Government’s commitment to achieving the VISION2020 strategy of eliminating avoidable blindness, supported by the Fred Hollows Foundation. It will also interact with other Fred Hollows Foundation initiatives in country, namely the cataract surgeons training and trachoma projects. The position will be based in a district hospital with travel required.
The successful candidate will:
- Have three years MD residency in ophthalmology from a reputable institution
- Have extensive demonstrated ophthalmic surgical and clinical experience
- Be registered with the national medical council for practicing ophthalmology
- Have experience working and ability as a trainer for cataract, including small incision cataract surgery
- Be commited to patient centered, quality services and the data collection and analysis required to provide the evidence base for these services
- Have familiarity or training in other relevant ophthalmic subspecialties
- Be flexible and familiar with working and training conditions in developing countries and challenging contexts
- Have excellent inter-personal and communications skills and a commitment to collaboration
- Bring energy and enthusiasm to the development of eye health services in Eritrea
- Have the ability to obtain the appropriate working visa for Eritrea.
