Senior Manager - Programmes

Columbia Global Centers | Africa is part of Columbia University’s global network of centers, which together aim to create opportunities in research, scholarship and teaching around the world, and expand Columbia's mission as a global university. Established in Nairobi in 2011, CGC Africa links the continent to Columbia’s scientific rigor, technological innovation, and academic leadership. It provides Columbia students and academics with a base from which to conduct research in and for Africa, in disciplines including sustainable development, urban planning and climate change. The Centre also contributes to the fight against poverty under the umbrella of the Millennium Development Goals, and works closely with policy makers, governments, and regional and African institutions, providing them with objective, science-based advice. The Center invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill the position of Senior Manager.
Purpose of role:
Reporting to the Director of the Columbia Global Centers | Africa (Nairobi), the Senior Manager - Programmes is responsible for managing all programme aspects of the Nairobi Center.
In this role the incumbent will:
  • Implement and manage all programming as well as support the Director in strategically conceiving of new programmatic opportunities in line with the major pillars of the Columbia Global Centers’ network mission: education, research and outreach
  • Build and maintain relationships with staff within the network of centers, with local and regional academic institutions and other partners
  • Support the Director as needed in engaging and building substantive relationships with Columbia University faculty, deans, Schools, Institutes and Centers on campus
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Ensures the implementation of different projects, research and educational initiatives and does the reporting, as required, making sure to communicate frequently with the relevant New York office staff
  2. Work closely with the Director, program staff locally and across the network as well as with faculty in building and implementing network-wide programs
  3. Write proposals, as required, in response to different requests by donors who provide grants and gifts
  4. Actively cooperate with other centers in the global network in building and implementing bi-center and multi-center networkwide, research activities that will inform and guide global
  5. Maintain a database of academic and other partners in the region to identify opportunities for collaboration with Columbia faculty
  6. Follow up on new initiatives and opportunities in the region, from the Columbia campus and across the centers
  7. Represent the director in communicating the activities and services offered by the Center to Columbia faculty, administrators, alumni and partners in the region
  8. Maintain and enforce the Center’s identity standards, including editorial and visual guidelines
  9. Help manage project implementation, impact assessment, monitoring and evaluation of undertakings in the Center.
  10. Other duties and special projects as assigned by the Center Director.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Master’s degree in Development studies or other related field
  • A minimum of seven (7) years relevant experience post master’s degree in a managerial and program management position
  • Extensive experience in multi-level and multi-tiered staff management
  • Prior experience living and/or working in Kenya and /or other African countries
  • Preference will be given to candidates with international project experience within a US university administrative structure
  • Work experience in a multi-cultural setting
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Professional demeanor with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to function with little direction in an unstructured and highly complex environment
  • Ability to work as a member of a collaborative team while exercising independent judgment
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines
  • Negotiation and network development experience
