OVERVIEW OF CTG GLOBAL

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
Our clients’ GIS have traditionally relied only on remote sensing information to create the maps requested by clients. Satellite images are a great way of gathering information of the field without having to travel to remote areas. The reason for that is that the security situation did not allow our staff to go to the ground where there was need and the harsh conditions of the environment.
· Geospatial data collection using GPS devices and other GIS software of South Central Somalia.
· Data transfer from raw GPS formats to GIS standards.
· Provision of high quality GIS data to support the Section’s requests.
· Assistance to other sections in getting information from the field for their operations, especially Movcon, Transport, Engineering, Operations and Plans.
GENERAL FUCNTIONS
The GIS / GPS Data Collector will be responsible for the following tasks:
· Primary data capture techniques, mainly GPS field work and remote sensing interpretation of South-Central Somalia.
· Data transfer from GPS devices to our GIS databases, including the conversion into different geographic data formats.
· Assist other members of the Section in the production of geospatial products, especially big-scale urban maps, using appropriate data formats, analysis and compilation in compliance with approved Section’s SOPs.
· Comply with standards, data sources, techniques, and workflows involved in GIS data collection used by the Section.
· Conduct training in basic map reading / comprehension and Global Positioning System (GPS) use for non GIS staff.
· The staff will be responsible for the geospatial data collection process using various GPS receivers. Among those steps in the process
· The staff will be involved in data capture in the field, data automation, data conversion from raw to interpreted, data transfer to UNSOA GIS geodatabases.
· The staff will be involved in data translation (format and schema) and digitizing from primary and secondary geographic sources.
· The GIS / GPS Data collector will be responsible for the field data gathering workflow:
Planning: based on requirements gathered by the Mogadishu GIS Office responsible, the staff will develop a travel plan for each specific field mission.
Preparation: obtaining existing data, redrafting poor-quality map sources, editing scanned map images, removing noise, setting up appropriate GIS software systems to accept data.
Digitizing: transferring data in raw format into a standard UNSOA GIS geographic format for inclusion on maps.
Editing:validating data, as well as correcting errors and improving quality.
· Perform any other duties as assigned by clients through the UNSOA GIS Section.
ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE
· Qualifications, skills, experience: A first level university degree in a geospatial related science and two (2) years minimum experience in GPS field data collection and data integration in GIS systems.
· Sound expertise in the ESRI software suite, especially ArcPad. Knowledge of GeoCollector for ArcPad is an advantage.
· Experience in using GPS devices for mapping purposes, especially high-end Trimble hardware.
· Solid computer skills, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Access).
· Experience in database management, mapping and cartographic standards is an asset.
Deliverables and Expected Output
· Hardcopy maps at scales 1:50,000 and higher in compliance with UNSOA GIS Standards.
· Report after each field mission with area surveyed, relevant photos of landmarks, water crossings, road sections, etc.
· List of all features that have been collected.
· Brief description of the work and schedule of events, problems encountered, data processing. A summary of the project including planning, field data collection methods and parameters, data processing methods and parameters, any project problems, anomalies, deviations, etc.
· Back-up of data.
· Quality control and assurance of data collected and integrated into the GIS database schemas and naming of features found in the field.
