Lutheran World Federation/Department for World Service Kenya Programis seeking to recruit a Kenyan national for the following position in Kakuma Refugee Camp:
Position: Deputy Child Protection Officer – Best Interests Determination (BID)
Duties and Responsibilities
· Undertake Best Interest Determination (BIDs) for unaccompanied and separated children and other vulnerable children using child-friendly interview techniques and clearly documenting all relevant responses.
· Identify protection risks and refer children to appropriate services as required.
· Work collaboratively with the BID team and panel to establish mechanism for conducting BID assessments and review of decisions during BID panel meetings.
· Attend and contribute to regular and ad hoc BID panel meetings.
· Facilitate proper documentation of BID reports of unaccompanied, separated and other vulnerable children.
· Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to facilitate practical and efficient responses to protection concerns.
· Prepare and submit weekly/monthly and feature reports as required and/or contribute to those being prepared by the Officer.
· Assist in formulation of proposals outlining on the needs of children in Kakuma refugee camp, and participate in broader protection initiatives as relevant.
· Participate in community events and celebrations that promote child rights and participation.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the BID Officer.
Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Social work/Social Sciences or equivalent.
- 3 years work experience in child protection, social work or with development-related organisations.
- Experience in child counselling or knowledge of child-friendly interview techniques.
- Excellent communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
- Knowledge of community based child protection approaches, preferably including experience in participatory approaches (PRA/PLA) and child participation methodologies.
- Proficiency in IT including ability to use MS application packages (Word, Excel and database software).
- Knowledge of international and national legal frameworks as they apply to refugee children, including status determination, protection concerns, child rights and alternative care structures.
- Ability to adapt to changing program priorities and emergency priorities that may arise.
- Strong self-starter, able to take initiative and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
- Positive attitude towards community work with an emphasis on utilizing existing community structures and allowing communities to make decisions about their own lives.
- Commitment to LWF Child Protection Policy.
