Deputy Child Protection Officer

Lutheran World Federation/Department for World Service Kenya Programis seeking to recruit a Kenyan national for the following position in Kakuma Refugee Camp:
Position: Deputy Child Protection Officer – Best Interests Determination (BID)
Duties and Responsibilities
· Undertake Best Interest Determination (BIDs) for unaccompanied and separated children and other vulnerable children using child-friendly interview techniques and clearly documenting all relevant responses.
· Identify protection risks and refer children to appropriate services as required.
· Work collaboratively with the BID team and panel to establish mechanism for conducting BID assessments and review of decisions during BID panel meetings.
· Attend and contribute to regular and ad hoc BID panel meetings.
· Facilitate proper documentation of BID reports of unaccompanied, separated and other vulnerable children.
· Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to facilitate practical and efficient responses to protection concerns.
· Prepare and submit weekly/monthly and feature reports as required and/or contribute to those being prepared by the Officer.
· Assist in formulation of proposals outlining on the needs of children in Kakuma refugee camp, and participate in broader protection initiatives as relevant.
· Participate in community events and celebrations that promote child rights and participation.
· Perform other duties as assigned by the BID Officer.
Qualifications and Experience
  1. Degree in Social work/Social Sciences or equivalent.
  2. 3 years work experience in child protection, social work or with development-related organisations.
  3. Experience in child counselling or knowledge of child-friendly interview techniques.
  4. Excellent communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili.
  5. Knowledge of community based child protection approaches, preferably including experience in participatory approaches (PRA/PLA) and child participation methodologies.
  6. Proficiency in IT including ability to use MS application packages (Word, Excel and database software).
  7. Knowledge of international and national legal frameworks as they apply to refugee children, including status determination, protection concerns, child rights and alternative care structures.
  8. Ability to adapt to changing program priorities and emergency priorities that may arise.
  9. Strong self-starter, able to take initiative and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities.
  10. Positive attitude towards community work with an emphasis on utilizing existing community structures and allowing communities to make decisions about their own lives.
  11. Commitment to LWF Child Protection Policy.
