The Company
Our client, the Kenya Electricity Generating Company Limited (KenGen) is the leading electric power generation company in Kenya, producing about 80 percent of electricity consumed in the country. To deliver its mandate, the company employs about 2400 staff located in different power plants in the country. KenGen recognizes that to maintain leadership in the liberalized electric energy sub-sector in Kenya and the Eastern Africa Region, it needs to attract and retain the best and highly competent staff.
It is in this regard that KenGen is seeking to recruit a highly motivated and professional individual to fill the following key position:
Roles & Responsibilities
Human Resource and Administration Director

Reporting to the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer the jobholder will be responsible for delivering the entire spectrum of human resource and administrative strategies. A key part of this role will be to provide leadership in change management, organisational development initiatives ensuring staff motivation and a conducive working environment.

Key responsibilities:

Managerial responsibilities

1.Lead and provide thought leadership in the development and implementation of human resource strategies, policies, and procedures to achieve KenGen’s strategic objectives.
2.Oversee the coordination of the recruitment and selection process, induction and orientation of new staff and manpower planning and ensure KenGen attracts and retains qualified and skilled personnel.
3.Manage and ensure appropriate training and development policies and programmes are in place.
4.Ensure efficient and effective administration services including maintenance of KenGen’s property, offices and provision of transportation services.
5.Develop accountability structures, oversee periodic reporting and projects and monitor the performance indicators for the HR and Administration departments.
6.Identify, develop, deploy and retain talented staff including completing performance appraisals, personal development and succession plans effectively and on time in accordance with the established performance management system.
7.Prepare briefs for the Executive management meeting and prepare Board papers on policy proposals for presentation to the Staff Board Committee.
8.Prepare Government quarterly reports on the department’s performance contract progress for incorporation into KenGen’s corporate performance report.
9.Prepare and submit departmental budgets for approval to the executive management and the Board and ensure effective monitoring and management of costs.

Advisory responsibilities

1.Ensure the continuous development and maintenance of an effective performance management system through implementation of best practice methodologies and provide expert advice.
2.Administer best practice compensation and benefits systems and maintain a robust remuneration strategy and appropriate terms and conditions of employment to attract, retain and motivate staff.
3.Maintain an awareness of the requirements of employment legislation to ensure that KenGen complies with all legal requirements and to provide sound advice to management.
4.Establish efficient machinery for effective employee relations and advise both management and staff to ensure effective communication and development of KenGen’s desired organisation culture.
5.Regularly review KenGen’s organisation structure and provide strategic advice on its appropriateness with regard to effectiveness and efficiency and ensure sufficient staffing to deliver and support the business.
6.Lead and contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate change management initiatives.
Requirements
1.Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
2.A Postgraduate Diploma in Human Resources Management is mandatory.
3.Member of IHRM
4.An MBA or Masters in Human Resources degree will be an added advantage.
5.minimum of 10 years’ experience in managing human resources and administration functions and at least 5 years in a senior management position in a unionised environment.
6.Proven ability to delicately solve sensitive matters and ensure industrial harmony.
