JOB SUMMARY
The Nutrition Advisor will be responsible for providing nutrition technical assistance to the ongoing International Medical Corps mission programs, monitor current emergency and transition programs, and assist in nutrition assessment and project design for new program startup.
The Nutrition Advisor will be responsible for providing technical support and capacity building to International Medical Corps teams in the countries of assignment in order to successfully plan, implement, monitor and evaluate International Medical Corps nutrition programs.
The Nutrition Advisor will be responsible for ensuring that the nutrition programs are implemented in line with international humanitarian standards, and country and donor guidelines. The Nutrition Advisor will also work closely with the Country Directors and technical staff to provide input into program development and country level strategies as required. Additionally, the Nutrition Advisor will be responsible for supporting NFS new initiatives.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
This position demands technical knowledge, training experience, mentoring skills, and work experience in difficult circumstances and conflict areas as well as recovery and development settings.
Technical Program Support
• Ensure that the implementation of the nutrition programs conform to internationally accepted standards and country guidelines.
• With the countries nutrition focal points, monitor program impact and ensure that program data is valid and relevant, and used to inform program development.
• Provide support to the teams on updating their CMAM data in the Minimum Reporting Package website.
• Provide guidance to staff implementing the International Medical Corps Mission programs on the integration of a nutrition component into other sectors as appropriate following the International Medical Corps integration guidance.
• Provide technical leadership and support for the teams to conduct nutrition surveys including KAP/KPC, nutrition causal analysis and coverage surveys, etc
• Provide technical leadership in formative research to help the teams adapt their Social and Behavior Change activities to the findings using as appropriate Behavior Change frameworks and Trials of Improved Practice, etc
• Provide technical review of proposals and project reports prior to submission to donors.
• Participate in the development and expansion of International Medical Corps nutrition programming in emergency and development settings.
Capacity Building
• With the countries nutrition focal points, assess the training needs of nutrition staff and develop a training program to meet these needs.
• With the countries nutrition focal points, conduct nutrition training for project nutrition staff and MOH counterparts implementing nutrition programs, focusing on all aspects of community-based management of acute malnutrition (CMAM), Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF),micronutrient deficiencies, and Social and Behavior Change.
• With the countries nutrition focal points, ensure the establishment and strengthening of nutrition monitoring activities and train health staff (IMC, MOH, and local NGO) in case detection, follow-up of defaulters, and referral mechanisms.
• With the countries nutrition focal points, train health staff on surveys including nutrition, KAP/KPC, barrier analysis, coverage surveys, causal analysis, and other assessments of nutritional status of target groups.
Coordination
• Assist the country teams in liaising, with the Ministry of Health, donors, and other agencies (UNICEF, WHO, and WFP)
• Assist the country teams in developing partnerships with others NGOs and academic institutions.
• If needed, assist the teams in representing International Medical Corps in Nutrition Cluster and other relevant Nutrition related meetings
Nutrition and Food Security Department Support
• Participate in International Medical Corps working groups
• Support the communication department in providing useful quantitative and qualitative updates for website and other International Medical Corps publications
• Work in Collaboration with the Monitoring and Evaluation department to provide accurate quantitative data for the annual report
• Participate in International and Regional conferences, meetings, round tables as required
• Participate and take leadership on specific NFS department projects, such as research, new initiatives, and developing IMC policies and program models.
• Provide nutrition serge support to International Medical Corps’ emergency response team, deploying to conduct assessments, develop an appropriate response, and start up lifesaving nutrition activities.
Security
• Fully adhere to International Medical Corps Security procedures, communication protocols and standard operating procedures.
• Behaves at all times in a manner which positively promotes International Medical Corps and its work
Skills & Requirements:
• Bachelors with seven years’ experience, or Master’s Degree with five years’ experience in nutrition, public health nutrition, nursing, or other related discipline.
• Minimum of 5 years with Master’s degree and seven years with Bachelor’s degree in the implementation and management of or provision of technical support to nutrition programs (including Community-based Management of Acute Malnutrition; IYCF; etc) in emergencies.
• Prior capacity building/training experience essential
• Excellent communication skills essential
• Prior experience in surveys (SMART, KAP, etc) an asset
• Ability to create solutions or responses to problems in an autonomous way
• Proven ability to work independently and in insecure areas
• High level of English written and oral communication essential
