Position:Kenya Programme Advisor

Location:Nairobi, with frequent travel in Kenya and the Horn of Africa
The Life & Peace Institute (LPI) is an international and ecumenical centre that supports and promotes non-violent approaches to conflict transformation through a combination of research and action that entails the strengthening of existing local capacities and enhancing preconditions for building peace.
LPI has recently re-established its peacebuilding engagement in Kenya and is now seeking a qualified applicant to fill the position of Programme Advisor for the Kenya programme.
You will be a key person in programme development including building relationships with new and old partners and taking a lead in supporting the programme implementation. An important part of your work will also be in planning, monitoring and and evaluating the programme implementation. You will also collaborate with research institutes in the field of conflict transformation and issues related to LPI’s programme. You will be a part of a dynamic and innovative team in our Nairobi office where you will work closely with LPI’s Somalia Programme through joint planning meetings and sharing of experiences and lessons.
Essential Responsibilities:
•Takes a lead role in re-establishing LPI’s peacebuilding engagement in Kenya including partnership development, programme/ project design, Monitoring and evaluation, proposal development, documentation of lessons learnt and identifying relevant peacebuilding opportunities.
•Supports LPI’s partners in Kenya to develop relevant peacebuilding engagement, responding to clearly identified needs and aligning with LPI’s programme in Kenya.
•Provides tailor-made and needs-based technical support to partners in areas such as project and research design, data collection, analysis, report writing, monitoring and evaluation, community dialogue processes and collaborative peacebuilding action.
•Nurtures relationships of mutual learning between LPI, its partners and target actors/communities.
•Monitors and reports on partners’ conflict transformation capacity development and programme progress in close collaboration with LPI’s programme team.
•Ensures regular presence and close accompaniment of partners and community processes in the field, during relevant stages of the programme implementation.
•Participates in the documentation and communication of programme findings; gathers materials and documents experiences and lessons learned that could further be used to enhance LPI’s and partners’ activities.
•Liaises and collaborates with researchers and research institutes in Kenya or elsewhere, which are conducting research related to conflict transformation issues applicable to LPI’s programme.
•Works closely with LPI colleagues through exchange, joint planning meetings and sharing of experiences and lessons, particularly with the Somalia programme team and partners.
Education, knowledge and skills:
•At least 3 years of professional experience of project work in peacebuilding and/or community development fields, preferably in Kenya.
•Professional experience in conducting social research and data analysis using participatory action methodology.
•University degree in peace and conflict, education, monitoring & evaluation, development studies or other relevant field. Master’s preferred, Bachelor with relevant skills and experience (5+ years) may be considered.
•Fluency in both spoken and written Swahili is required as well as strong English writing and speaking skills. Communication skills in other local languages are considered a merit.
•Good analytical writer (English).
•Demonstrated interest in peacebuilding, training and organisational capacity development, experience in NGO programme work a strong asset.
•Demonstrated professional experience in planning, monitoring and evaluation processes, including, but not limited to, proposal development and donor reporting.
•Experience and interest in working on issues of gender and generation mainstreaming in peacebuilding is an asset.
•Interest and experience with faith-based peacebuilding processes is considered an asset.
•Able and willing to travel to field locations in remote parts of Kenya or beyond Kenyan borders.
•Balanced, mature personality with developed diplomatic skills, able to cope with working in stressful and complex environments for long hours.
•Eager and flexible mind, willing to acquire new skills on the job.
•The candidate should not require a work permit to work in Kenya.
