Kenya - Field coordinator - North Horr

About the mission
SOLIDARITES INTERNATIONAL (SI) has been operational in Somalia and in Kenya since 2007. SI main areas of intervention are WASH and Food Security. In Kenya, SI has a field base in North Horr (Marsabit county) and implements resilience and WASH projects with funding from EU and DFID. In Somalia, SI has field bases in two regions: Lower Juba (Dhobley) and Hiraan. SI secured funding from ECHO, EU, and CHF. SI is strongly fundraising for other donors. At the time of the writing of this job description SI is also considering opening activities in other locations.
The Kenya/ Somalia mission does not follow a classic set up. There are two different missions followed by the same coordination team. Kenya and Somalia contexts are different: even though security can be volatile in some part of Kenya, access is still possible whereas it is restricted in Somalia.
About the job:
Main Working Location: 90% working in North Horr (base and visits to project sites) and 10% in Nairobi (coordination/donor meetings upon request).
North Horr (Marsabit county) is a safe and quiet village.
Nairobi is a relatively safe city, although precautions must be taken at all times and avoiding hot spots.
The main challenges of the position are:
The Field Coordinator has the role of delegated Head of Mission in Kenya for Marsabit county, North Horr sub-county in which SI intervenes.
She/he in North Horr is responsible for all projects implemented by SI in Marsabit County.
She/he will be under the supervision of the Country Director and will work closely with Nairobi coordination team.
Responsibilities
  • The field coordinator proposes a regional /country strategy according to the geopolitical and humanitarian context, and ensures its implementation once validated.
  • The field coordinator checks and ensures that projects are carried out in accordance with the SI charter, respecting all internal and contractual procedures and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • The field coordinator mobilizes the material and financial resources necessary for programs to run smoothly, and supervises resource management, quality of deliveries and resources are used for the intended objectives.
  • The field coordinator coordinates the teams in place and is the focal point for their security in his/her assigned zone. He represents SI in the county’s coordination meetings and other platforms as appropriate.
  • The field coordinator is the Head of Mission's direct contact and representative at the field level.
Your profile
Education:
  • Master’s degree (or Bachelor degree with 5 years of work experience) in International Relations, Social Science, Business Administration, Agriculture, Resilience building, Food Security & Livelihoods and Engineering or related areas.
  • Training or specialization in a technical field (Project Management, WASH, Food Security & Livelihoods, DRR – Disaster Risk Reduction, Agriculture).
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years working experience in Project Management and in the NGOs sector, responsible for major projects
  • At least 2 year of field experience with NGOs
  • Experience of working in East Africa (esp. Kenya in Arid and Semi-Arid Land areas) is an added value
  • Experience in proposal and report writing.
Technical skills and knowledge:
  • Proven managerial record and experience in managing large staff and programs
  • Previous experience in working in insecure environment and experience in Security management
  • Advanced proposal and report writing skills required
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong capacity to work with initiative and without close supervision
  • Excellent communication, coordination and negotiation skills
  • Team leader and pro-active
  • Proven knowledge of donors’ rules and regulations/ guidelines (EU/DFID and others);
  • Good knowledge of Project Cycle Management
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills: ability to effectively liaise with a variety of people in a multi-cultural environment
  • Excellent competency in Microsoft packages(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
Languages:
  • Excellent English (writing and oral)
  • Knowledge of Kiswahili and local language is and added advantage
  • Knowledge of French is an added asset
