Based in Nairobi, FSD Africa is a program that promotes financial sector development across Sub-Saharan Africa. Its goal is to reduce poverty. It achieves this by supporting initiatives to improve financial inclusion and by helping financial institutions and markets drive economic growth. It is a market catalyst, supporting processes of change that benefit financial markets in a systemic way. FSD Africa strengthens market capacity: by supporting skills development, by making it easier for market participants to access and use the different types of information on which efficient financial markets depend, and by encouraging investment in financial infrastructure.
ABOUT THE JOB:
FSD Africa is seeking an Assistant Manager – Change Management and Building Services Markets. S/he will be responsible for spending the majority of time supporting the director - change management and building services markets on: change management interventions, working directly with financial institutions, and on other projects aimed at stimulating the development of a number of services markets that are important to financial markets. S/he will also be responsible for supporting the development of organization's capital markets strategy.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the director on the capital markets strategy work, especially with research and analysis, but also by acting as a 'sounding board' for new ideas;
- Support colleagues in ensuring that program delivery is focused to meet DFID’s expected outcomes and maximize developmental impact;
- Build and maintain relationships with counterparties in FI partners leveraging new opportunities that may arise and dealing promptly with any difficulties;
- Review and evaluate in-bound concept notes, prepare investment approval documentation (i.e. board papers), draw up grant agreements;
- Support needs assessments and support the design of specific program interventions with FI partners (e.g. directly or through a proposed challenge fund);
- Identify and support the technical experts (contractors) who will be deployed to carry out the day-to-day program work;
- Ensure monitoring and evaluation of proposed investments is robust and relevant e.g. through timely data collection and design of supplemental evaluative research;
- Support the development of a database of international and pan-African technical experts and service providers;
- Develop effective relationships with peers in other FSDs to leverage their networks and contacts and bring joint working opportunities to their attention;
- Ensure effective and efficient procurement of external resources in line with organization's procurement processes, and monitoring of grant/investment programs in line with project plans;
- Participate in meetings/conference calls with prospective FI partners, funders (including DFID), organization's colleagues;
- Contribute to organization's marketing and communications activities, e.g. prepare briefing notes, blogs, brochures etc.
Qualifications:
- Top quality academic credentials including a Master's degree in a relevant topic;
- Knowledge/experience of working in Africa;
- Knowledge/experience of working in an investment environment (investment banking, private equity, stock broking);
- Strong research aptitude;
- Ability to multi-task;
- Excellent relationship/interpersonal skills;
- Understanding of the 'market building approach';
- Demonstrable interest in the role that markets can play in reducing poverty (i.e. socially driven as well as outstanding professional skills);
- Excellent written and spoken English.
