ILRI Vacancy: Research Associate – Socio-economist

The International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) ILRI seeks to recruit a Research Associate – Socio-Economist to contribute to the implementation of the African Chicken Genetic Gains Program (ACGGP) in terms of socio-economics and gender analyses in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Nigeria:
General: ILRI works with partners worldwide to enhance the roles that livestock play in food security and poverty alleviation, principally in Africa and Asia. The outcomes of these research partnerships help people in developing countries keep their farm animals alive and productive, increase and sustain their livestock and farm productivity, find profitable markets for their animal products, and reduce the risk of livestock-related diseases.
A member of the CGIAR Consortium working for a food-secure future, ILRI has its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, a principal campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and offices in other countries in East, West and Southern Africa (Mali, Mozambique and Nigeria) and in South Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Southeast Asia (Laos, Thailand and Vietnam) and East Asia (China). http://www.ilri.org.
Main duties & responsibilities:
  • Contributes to the implementation of ACGG, an on-going research for development program in Ethiopia, Tanzania and Nigeria, particularly in relation to understanding socio-economics and gender aspects;
  • Collaborates with the ACGG team on the design and implementation of field surveys and other socio-economic research activities;
  • Compiles, analyzes and rigorously document primary and secondary socioeconomic data sets;
  • Contributes in developing research reports, journal articles and policy briefs;
  • Contributes to the guidance, support and monitoring of the National Agricultural System (NARS) partners in the planning and execution of ACGG research activities;
  • Pro-actively contribute and develop his/her skills in a team environment and take increasing responsibilities in all of the above;
  • Other reasonable duties that may be assigned by supervisor.
Minimum Requirement:
Education:
  • MSc degree from a recognized university in agricultural economics, agricultural development economics, development economics, resource economics, or any other related field in applied economics.
  • Experience in gender analyses as well as working in projects geared towards women empowerment
Experience:
  • At least two years of demonstrated experience in:
(i)         Designing and implementing surveys in rural settings (preferably household and market surveys)
(ii)       Management and analysis of large socioeconomic datasets using standard statistical and econometric software (preferably SPSS and/or STATA)
Skills:
A combination of good analytical, writing and field work skills; scientific rigor, initiative, ability to work both independently and as part of a team; gender mainstreaming and development good English (oral & written), computer skills and willingness to travel to Tanzania and Nigeria.
Duty Station:               Addis Ababa.
Job level:                      2D.
Monthly Base Salary: Birr 19,078 (Negotiable, depending on experience, skill and salary history of the candidate)
Terms of appointment:  This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position, initial appointment is fixed term for three years with the possibility of renewal, contingent upon individual performance and the availability of funding. The ILRI remuneration package for nationally recruited staff in Ethiopia includes very competitive salary and benefits such as life and medical insurance, offshore pension plan, etc.
The ILRI campus is set in a secure, attractive campus on the outskirts of Addis Ababa.  Dining and sports facilities are located on site.
