Media and Communication Officer - Pan African Climate Justice Alliance

Duration of the Initial Contract : 1 Year (Renewable subjective to performance & availability of funds)
Established in 2008, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) is a continental coalition of Civil Society Organizations from diverse backgrounds in Africa. With a membership of more than 800 organisations and networks, the Alliance brings together Faith-based Organisations, Farmers and Pastoralists Groups, Community-based Organisations, Non-Governmental Organisations, Trusts, Foundations, among other sectors with a common goal of promoting and advocating for Pro-poor, climate-friendly and equity-based responses to climate change. PACJA aims at unifying and coordinating isolated civil society efforts on climate change advocacy in Africa, so as to ensure that pro-poor and people-centered response measures are given attention as governments in Africa seek to mainstream climate change into national poverty reduction and sustainable development strategies and actions.
Job Summary
Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Secretary General, the Media and Communication Officer will be responsible for the formulation and implementation of the communication strategies to increase the visibility and awareness of PACJA’s activities and standpoints among civil society, partners, the media and all stakeholders.
Responsibilities
(i) Communications and Media
  • Implement and monitor the delivery of the communications and media strategy and plan; this includes developing a plan for each identified advocacy issue of PACJA and identifying opportunities that provide platforms for the Alliance media work
  • Participate in the crafting of communication and advocacy messages in coordination with the Programme Manager, Policy Officer and the rest of the Secretariat Team;
  • Maintaining and Updating the Website and social media platforms (i.e., twitter and facebook, LinkedIn intra/extranet)
  • Conceptualizing, developing and packaging various mass information materials on PACJA work for dissemination and/or advocacy purposes (e.g. brochures, briefing kits, videos, Newsletters etc.);
  • Review all publications produced by the Alliance to ensure that the PACJA branding and communication guidelines are uniformly and consistently followed
  • Establish and maintain contacts with national and international media
  • Monitor media coverage on Climate Change and other development issues and identify opportunities for PACJA engagement;
  • Write press releases, press briefings, press statements, media and campaign Q&As, and media messages, placing articles in the appropriate media;
  • Monitor media coverage of PACJA work across Africa and Internationally and write and disseminate internal memos on media developments;
  • Liaise with PACJA National platforms and Focal Points in implementing communication activities
(ii) Capacity Building
  • Build capacity of all PACJA staff in relation to communications and media through the development of guidelines, training materials and programs Help staff, PACJA members and allies prepare for media interviews ensuring that all agreed guidelines and protocol are observed;
  • Act as a media resource person for National Platforms, Focal organisations and Partners
(iii) Reporting
  • Assist in Producing and compiling regular activity reports and updates on the implementation of the planned work activities for management and communication purposes;
Requirements
  • A university degree in Communications, Journalism, or any other related field
  • At least 4 years of experience in Communications and Media work, preferably with an international/regional development Organization Ability to work on own initiative to build on and develop the job, combined with the ability to work effectively as part of a team;
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with the media, other civil society organizations, and networks;
  • Demonstrable capacity to orally articulate issues in a clear and a concise manner
  • Good interpersonal and communications skills
  • Strong analytical and conceptualization skills;
  • Strong presentation skills;
  • Proven experience writing skills; able to write press releases, letters, briefs, etc. Proven experience of using MS office application (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and desktop publishing software, knowledge and skill in graphic design,
