EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR THE PRODUCTION OF A DOCUMENTARY
LIVELIHOOD AND EDUCATION DOCUMENTARY 2014
Introduction:
Jesuit Refugee Service is an international Catholic Agency that provides specialized support services to refugees and other forcibly displaced persons in over 50 countries around the world. Our mission, as stated in our charter, is to accompany, serve and defend the rights of refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. This mission is built on faith in God who is present in human history, even in most tragic moments.
JRS Nairobi Project has been ongoing project responding to emergency needs of refugees through provision of food, non-food items, financial assistance, medical assistance, pastrol care, and advocacy. JRS has also been empowering refugees to engage in sustainable livelihoods so as to become self reliant through issuance of small loans, safety net, as well providing a market outlet for the handicrafts produced by refugees through Mikono Craft Shop. JRS also address refugee’s protection needs through provision of educational support to refugee children and adults at pre-school, secondary and tertiary levels of education.
Preamble:
Kenya has been consistently hosting large refugee numbers for the last two decades. Majority have resided in Kakuma and Dadaab camps with a significant number residing in urban areas in different states. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and partners have provided limited support to persons living in Urban areas with major focus being empowerment, creation and facilitation of linkage to service providers and advocacy with the government and other relevant stakeholders. Through JRS, Persons of Concern have been supported in livelihood and Education programs amongst other forms of assistance.
It is against this backdrop that the livelihood and Education teams are proposing to develop a documentary highlighting the livelihood and education intervention outcomes/impact and best practices that can be replicated in large scale or other operations in the future.
Objective:
The ultimate objective is to develop a strategic tool for advocacy; that would enhance positive action/decision for a wide range of stakeholders; refugees, donors, implementers, decision makers etc.
The proposal also anticipates that the documentary will strongly highlight the impact of the support given over the years with special focus on tenets of the graduation approach.
The documentary will target refugees who will not be able to demonstrate their lives prior and after support by UNHCR, JRS and other agencies in the areas of Education and livelihoods. A not less than twenty minutes’ documentary is expected.
Geographical scope:
It is proposed that the documentary covers identified beneficiaries within the urban program in six identified locations within Nairobi, targeting around ten beneficiaries.
Timeframe:
The activity is intended to be carried out and completed in the month of September 2014.
Logistical modalities::
Transport to the identified locations will be organized by JRS. The specific people to be interviewed will also be availed by JRS.
