CMI (Crisis Management Initiative) is an independent, non-governmental organisation that works to resolve conflicts and build sustainable peace across the globe. CMI contributes to conflict resolution through mediation, mediation support, dialogue and capacity-building processes. In Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) CMI works to contribute to the peaceful resolution of disputes, particularly by enhancing regional conflict resolution capacities, supporting ongoing peace processes and facilitating dialogue among different parties.
The Project Manager has a dual role; implementation of South Sudan country project portfolio and networking within the Horn of Africa region. Under the supervision of the Head of Sub Saharan Africa and in close cooperation with the Senior Manager for Gender and Inclusion, the Project Manager will be working as a part of the Sub Saharan Africa team with the following responsibilities:
  • Implementation of CMI South Sudan project portfolio supporting dialogue and mediation per CMI strategy;
  • Project design (where necessary), fundraising, monitoring and evaluation in close cooperation with the Sub Saharan Africa team and relevant CMI thematic advisors;
  • Keep abreast of and report on the country’s political developments as they relate to CMI’s work;
  • Manage CMI partnerships and relationships in the country, and liaise with relevant national stakeholders, peer organisations and donors;
  • Lead project reporting on South Sudan, both narrative and financial, for internal and external (donor) purposes; and
  • Supervise, support and develop the small team of national staff based in Juba.
The successful candidate is expected to have/be:
  • Five-seven years relevant experience, ideally some of it in/on South Sudan;
  • A strong and relevant background in conflict resolution, conflict prevention and peacebuilding work ideally with a focus on dialogue and mediation;
  • Demonstrable technical knowledge and professional commitment to CMI’s core principles, in particular on gender and inclusivity which is a focus element in CMI’s South Sudan portfolio;
  • Proven excellent implementation, managerial and networking skills, good judgment and cultural sensitivity;
  • Excellent understanding of South Sudan’s political context, including dynamics at the local and national level;
  • Good experience in networking, preferably from the Horn of Africa region;
  • A good team worker and have a pro-active attitude;
  • Viability to get things done;
  • Excellent command of English; knowledge of (Juba) Arabic and Kiswahili are assets;
  • Good writing skills;
  • Have a relevant university degree; a relevant Master’s degree is desirable.
The selected candidate is expected to be able to start working in May 2015. Working location is negotiable, but involves frequent travel to South Sudan and the wider region, so a candidate who is based in the country or the region is desirable.
