Community Based Adaptation Capacity Building Specialist

The Adaptation Learning Programme in CARE International is seeking a trainer to take up the position of Community Based Adaptation Capacity Building Specialist.  The CBA Specialist will support strategic development, design and delivery of capacity building, training and training of trainers related to proven community based adaptation approaches developed by ALP.  The successful candidate will be an experienced trainer and capacity builder who is able to innovate and develop new training approaches and materials appropriate to meeting the demand for capacity building in CBA.  CBA capacity building is targeted for practitioners and decision makers in Ghana, Kenya and Niger, where ALP has teams and ongoing adaptation work, and also in other countries in Africa where demand for capacity is growing.  The position is for two years initially and will preferably be based in Kenya or alternatively Ghana, with frequent travel to ALP and other African countries.  


CARE International and partners work with vulnerable communities to address the underlying causes of poverty and promote peace and development, through a strategic goal to reduce poverty through gender equality and empowering women, improving governance and striving for resilient development.  The Adaptation Learning Programme (ALP) for Africa develops, implements and disseminates approaches for community-based adaptation to climate change in Ghana, Niger and Kenya, in partnership with local civil society and government institutions.  Experience and evidence is shared with civil society organisations and used to influence adaptation planning, policies and programmes at national, regional and international levels through targeted advocacy and learning. ALP promotes replication and scaling up of successful CBA approaches by governmental and non-governmental institutions engaged in planning and implementing adaptation initiatives in the target countries and several other African countries.   


The CBA specialist will report to the ALP Regional Programme Coordinator and be a member of the Programme Coordination Team (PCT).  S/he will work closely with the other members of the PCT, the ALP country teams in Ghana, Niger and Kenya and with training institutes and adaptation programmes identified in these countries and elsewhere in Africa as key stakeholders for adaptation capacity building. 


Key responsibilities: 
1.    Lead capacity building and training on practical CBA approaches
2.    Support plans for adoption and up-scaling of CBA in Africa
3.    Develop and maintain capacity building relationships
4.    Support ALP quality assurance, learning and coordination

Required expertise:
•    University degree, preferably an advanced degree, in a relevant discipline such as international/rural development, training, social sciences, climate change adaptation or a related field.
•    At least eight years of relevant working experience, with at least 5 in Africa. 
•    Strong experience and skills in capacity building and training for a range of audiences from community and local to national level including training design, facilitation, use of participatory techniques and practical community based approaches, and production of training materials.
•    Experience in climate change adaptation, disaster risk reduction (DRR), resilience, smallholder agriculture or related field with a focus on supporting vulnerable people. 
•    Strong knowledge and skill in integrating gender and commitment to gender equality, rights and good governance 
•    Experience in participatory approaches to development and planning processes, working with communities and local governments. 
•    Knowledge of monitoring and evaluation and ability to document to publishable standard.
•    Concern for and interest in learning and innovation generally and about climate change adaptation and approaches to realising climate resilient development in particular.
•    Willing and able to live in and/or travel extensively in Africa.
•    Main working language of English required and ability to work in French desirable

We offer:  an attractive position based in Kenya, Ghana, or elsewhere with regular travel in Africa, for a fixed period to 30th June 2017.
