UNICEF SEEKS A STRATEGIC AND RESULTS-ORIENTED SENIOR EXPERT TO ADVANCE ITS NEW GENDER ACTION PLAN (GAP) IN EAST AND SOUTHERN AFRICA (ESARO)
Position: Regional Gender Advisor, P-5
Location: Nairobi, Kenya, Eastern and Southern Africa region (ESARO)
GAP Approach and Priorities: UNICEF Gender Action Plan focuses on achieving gender equitable results in seven sectoral areas: Health, Nutrition, HIV/AIDS, Education, WASH, Child Protection, and Social Inclusion. Issues range from the role of community health workers to women’s time and social burden in child care, procuring water, or providing adequate nutrition. The GAP especially highlights the importance of investing in adolescent girls and focuses on four cross-sectoral targeted priorities: 1) Ending child marriage; 2) Promoting gender-responsive adolescent health; 3) Advancing girl's secondary education; 4) Addressing gender-based violence in emergencies.

Candidates should have the following minimum qualifications:
- Advanced university degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in the social sciences (i.e. sociology, demography, psychology, political science and economics), public health, public policy or international development. A concentration in gender is a strong asset.
- Minimum twelve years of progressively responsible professional experience and demonstrated track record of having undertaken and led substantive programming and research on gender and development in key issue areas that are the focus of UNICEF’s Gender Action Plan.
- Experience in delivering results-based programmes on gender & development in ESARO
- Experience in programme management/leadership, especially at country/field level, essential.
- Fluency in English and another UN language.
- Knowledge of French and/or Portuguese would be considered a strong asset.
