Type: Consultancy for Online Tutoring

Actual working hours: 90 hours (online, work from home)
Total 8 weeks consultancy - 1 week preparation / 4 weeks for online tutoring / 3 weeks follow up support and assignment grading and report writing
GESCI, the Global E-Schools and Communities Initiative, is a non-profit organisation founded by the United Nations ICT Taskforce. GESCI, with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, provides strategic advice to relevant Ministries in developing countries on the effective use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) within the context of inclusive Knowledge Societies. GESCI is seeking an experienced Knowledge Society Expert with a Master’s degree in Economic, Political Science, Science or Knowledge Society pillar areas: Education or ICT or Science Technology and Innovation. Experience in online tutoring and a comprehensive knowledge of KS issues in developing countries are required. The consultant is to facilitate online tutoring in French for Module 6 for the ALICT capacity building programme.
The Knowledge Society Expert will be responsible for:
a) Acting as an online co-tutor for the module “Knowledge Society for Africa” as per the timeline indicated
b) Providing feedback and inputs to the ALICT course team to improve the module
c) Providing feedback to country groups for report writing on weekly basis during the online period d) Moderating forum discussions if needed
e) Answering participants’ questions via email
f) In coordination with the Student Support Officer, tracking the participant progress weekly on group assignments
g) Attending the tutor conference calls weekly to review progress and plan forward
h) Contributing to the module tutor summary report
i) Reviewing and grading the group assignments in French
Key requirements for the Knowledge Society Expert are:
- Master’s degree or higher in Economics, Political Science, Science, Education, ICT or relevant areas to Knowledge Society pillar areas: Education, ICT and Science, Technology and Innovation
- Experience in online tutoring and Technology Enhanced Learning. Knowledge and/or experience of leadership development issues would be an asset.
- Minimum of 5 years of directly relevant professional experience related to one or more of the above mentioned areas in developing countries, particularly in the African context
- Experience in working in online learning environments, knowledge of online learning materials development, managing online communities, forum moderation and conducting online courses would be an asset
- Supervising academic research is an asset
- Knowledge of the policies in Knowledge Society pillar areas: Education, ICT and STI in the African context would be an asset
- Strong research, analytical and communication skills
- Good time management and organizational skills to prioritize workload and meet tight deadlines
- Good communication skills in French and English
Duration:This is an international hiring. 90 hours(online, home based working) during the period of12thOctober 2015 to 4th December 2015.
Consultancy Fee:The consultancy fee will be Euro 2,000/- (Euro – Two thousand only). This amount is inclusive of 20 % withholding tax under Kenyan legislation for external consultants. The consultant will be working from home and cost associated with connectivity is to be covered by the consultant.
Expected Outputs:
- Online tutoring during the implementation stage of the module
- Participants progress review and feedback
- Review and grading of group assignments
- Contribution to tutoring report
Schedule for deliverables:
- Participation in orientation for tutoring 12th October 2015 to 16th October 215
- Online tutoring of the course 19th October 2015 to 13th Novemberr 2015 with required inputs of facilitating chats and forums, providing feedback of tasks and assignments to participants
- Provide inputs to participants for assignments development and grading assignments; from 16th Novemberr 2015 to 4th December 2015
Payment schedule:
100% upon completion of deliverables as required by the module tutoring process and approval by
GESCI.
Confidentiality and Copyright
The consultant will be required to sign a confidentiality clause whereby information accessed through the ALICT tutoring process can only be disclosed and shared with authorized members of the programme. GESCI will have ownership over any Intellectual Property developed for or derived from the tutoring engagement.
