BACKGROUND
Legal Action Worldwide (LAW) focuses on providing legal assistance in fragile and conflict-affected states. People living in such areas generally experience both an increased vulnerability to human rights violations and a decreased ability to access justice. LAW aims to address this through legal interventions aimed at empowering people to know and exercise their rights.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reports to
Legal Advocacy Officer
Functions/Key Results Expected
- Raising the profile and advocacy efforts of LAW by drafting and implementing a 2015 media strategy, under the supervision of the Legal Advocacy Officer.
- Assisting with media management and fundraising, including by developing proposals and applications, managing LAW’s twitter and Facebook accounts and by managing the website.
- Assisting the Executive Director with external relations and administrative tasks.
The Communications Intern will perform duties and responsibilities in accordance with the objectives and activities mentioned below:
Media
- Engaging with relevant partners and actors through social media to raise the profile and visibility of LAW and its projects.
- Promoting LAW’s advocacy messages and agendas through social media for specific projects.
- Maintaining and updating information on the website.
- Assisting with the monthly report to LAW’s Partners/IAC
- Drafting and circulating internal and external media briefs.
Fundraising:
- Assist in drafting concept notes, donor proposals and preparation of donor reports, maintaining records to enable accurate and timely donor reporting.
- Maintaining a timetable indicating when certain grants must be applied for, based on LAW’s donor mapping.
External Relations:
- Attending meetings with the Executive Director
Administrative:
- Organising materials for meetings and minute-taking;
- Assist in managing logistical and travel arrangements on behalf of the project;
- Replying to emails enquiring about LAW;
- Updating and maintaining different databases.
Skills and Qualifications Required:
- Must have permission to work in Kenya.
- Bachelors degree in law, human rights, or journalism;
- Experience working in the media and communications;
- Experience working and managing social media accounts;
- Experience in fundraising;
- Knowledge of international human rights law and humanitarian law, including UN mechanisms and international justice mechanisms;
- Knowledge of international relations;
- Excellent organisational and analytical skills;
- Excellent research and drafting skills;
- Experience planning and coordinating international conferences, roundtables and seminars;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and strong technical literacy;
- Experience working with international NGOs is strongly preferred.
Duration of the assignment:6 months, starting in 1 March 2015
