Monitoring and Evaluation, Senior Specialist

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is driven by the vision of a world without malnutrition. GAIN is a Swiss based international organization that mobilizes public-private partnerships and provides financial and technical support to deliver nutritious foods to those people most at risk of malnutrition.  The organization is delivering improved nutrition to an estimated 700 million people in more than 30 countries, half of whom are women and children. 
Within this portfolio the Monitoring Learning and Research MLR team supports programs to ensure high quality monitoring to improve program performance and leads on the development of research and evaluation projects embedded in GAIN’s programs and/or related to GAIN’s mission.

MONITORING AND EVALUATION, SENIOR SPECIALIST
The overall objective of this Specialist position will be to provide support and guidance for the identification and implementation of research and evaluation projects in the East Africa Region in collaboration with the MLR team and to support GAIN’s program portfolio through strengthened monitoring methods.

Responsibilities
Monitoring and program improvement: 
•  In collaboration with MLR team, the specialist will develop and adapt monitoring frameworks for GAIN’s programs in Kenya and the region, and will work with implementing organizations to develop systems for the use of monitoring data for program improvement
•  Summarize and interpret monitoring data as part of preparation for GAIN’s monthly, quarterly and annual reports, and reports to donors as needed
•  Distil and present critical findings from monitoring data to country manager and other stakeholders
Research and evaluation:
•  In collaboration with MLR team, identify opportunities in Kenya and the region for program evaluations and research studies embedded in GAIN’s programs and/or relevant to GAIN’s mission and participate in all aspects of planning, implementation, analysis and dissemination of such projects.
•  Identify and provide guidance and support to research and evaluation partners in Kenya and the East Africa region.
•  Prepare as needed, reports to donors and other partners on research and evaluation activities in the region.
Dissemination and institutional development
•  Participate actively in the preparation of technical reports, peer reviewed publications, conference presentations and other media based on the results of program monitoring, evaluation and research in the region.
•  Support efforts on institutional capacity development within GAIN through preparation of templates, short courses or other activities as needed.
•  Other activities related to MLR’s mandate may be added as identified.

Experience
•  Research and/or program evaluation design, implementation and dissemination, and/or experience in the development and operationalization of monitoring frameworks and plans.
•  Quantitative data analysis skills and experience (knowledge of qualitative research methods an asset).
•  Experience in nutrition or related aspect of health program development an asset.
Skills & Attributes
•  Initiative, critical thinking and analysis and ability to work independently.
•  Technical writing (including publication in peer reviewed journals) and preparation of presentations of research results.
•  Willingness and ability to work in a multi-cultural, high pressure, results-driven environment.
•  Teamwork/Collaboration capacity.
•  Fluency in English.
•  Be willing to travel in Kenya and the region.
Education
•  Minimum Masters (preferably Doctoral) level training in nutrition, public health, or a suitable equivalent.
