Manager, Agribusiness and Forestry (Africa)

Background / General description
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, is a global investor and advisor committed to promoting projects in its developing member countries that are economically beneficial, financially and commercially sound, and environmentally and socially sustainable. IFC finances private sector projects, mobilizes capital in the international financial markets, helps clients improve social and environmental sustainability, and provides technical assistance and advice to governments and businesses in the developing world. IFC’s Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services Department (MAS) is seeking a Manager for its Agribusiness and Forestry investment operations in Africa. The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya. IFC’s strategy for the Agribusiness and Forestry sectors addresses food security and sustainability across the agri-forestry value chain by increasing productivity, promoting inclusiviness and making IFC’s environment and social standards value-add business drivers. IFC plans to triple its regional agri-forestry annual program by 2017 and reach 1 million farmers. The program focuses on IDA countries and Frontier and Conflict Affected Situations as well as promoting South/South investments. The FY13 program committed $360 million of investments, including mobilization of about $100 million from third party funds.
Duties and Accountabilities
Business Accountabilities and Key Business Objectives
  • Responsible for implementation of regional industry strategy for IFC’s investment services (IS) and advisory services (AS) in the sector, and for delivering on business targets and development outcomes for IS and AS in the sector. Partnership with other IFC industries (Financial Markets and Infrastructure), Global Relationship Managers, Sector Leads and World Bank is critical;
  • Manage resources for IFC’s IS and AS for Industry/ product line(s) in the Region, in partnership with Country Managers;
  • Develop and execute Global Agriculture Food Security Program (GAFSP) strategy in the region in coordination with GAFSP Head.
  • For each priority target and existing client of the Industry in the Region, jointly develop (with relevant Country Manager, Sector Lead and /or Global Relationship Manager ) client strategy, with input from relevant Industry Specialists;
  • Support business development for the Industry in the Region and manage key client relationships;
  • Jointly with other regional/global Agribusiness and Forestry Managers, form the Agribusiness and Forestry Leadership team ensuring execution of the strategy across the world, disseminating global Industry lessons and experience across regions contributing to global knowledge bank for Industry and ensuring staff global/local project opportunities;
  • Work jointly with relevant managers to meet Scorecard targets for Industry in the Region and globally;
  • P&L responsibility for all clients in the Industry in the Region;
  • In addition to areas of primary responsibility, partner with Portfolio Manager to ensure high quality, performance and compliance of industry portfolio in the Region, and with Country Manager to support business development efforts Resource Management Accountabilities
  • Jointly recruit, lead and manage an integrated team of regional staff, in partnership with Country Managers and regional AS management;
  • Mentor and develop staff in Region mapped to the Industry and/ or global practice group ;
  • Staff new projects with the appropriate teams, seeking support from Sector Leads when needed, and provide quality control on teams’ output;
  • Develop IFC’s brand in Region, building on World Bank Group (WBG) global brand and overall communications strategy;
  • Direct reporting: Industry staff in Region. Prepare staff evaluation reviews for direct reports and provide feedback for Industry staff in HQ and/ or Regions. Relationship Management
  • Manage relationships with industry clients in Region, in coordination with Global Industry Manager and Country Managers; ensure that client needs are met promptly and proactively;
  • Foster collaboration within the WBG Global Practices of the sector in the Region as well as globally;
  • Work with Sector Leads and Credit to identify and manage industry risks in Region.
    Selection Criteria
    In addition to meeting the WBG managerial selection criteria*, the job holder will be expected to have:
  • A Master's degree or equivalent professional qualification in finance or business and a minimum of 15 years relevant work;
  • Experience in supervising portfolio and a proven track record in handling complex transactions;
  • Proven track record of managing and motivating staff across different locations, becoming strong mentor and growing businesses
  • Ability to represent IFC externally and to develop and manage relationships with clients, government, media, donors, and other stakeholders;
  • Strong sense of service to clients and demonstrated business development aptitude. Proven success in developing client relationships and executing quality investments;
  • Ability to work in the matrix as an integral part of the Regional and Industry Department, and deliver high quality work within deadlines to meet team objectives;
  • Ability to collaborate closely with World Bank and other MFIs and financing institutions and banks;
  • Good 'deal sense' based on demonstrated strong analytical skills and sound business judgment;
  • Ability to develop innovative solutions and challenges the status quo in order to build the business;
  • Excellent supervisory skills and openness to feedback; new ideas and ability to guide staff to solutions to problems;
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills in English; Fluency in French a plus;
  • Recognized as a team player and leader, ability to manage and resolve conflict; and
