Film and photography in Hiraan
Background
Oxfam has worked with local Somali organisations to implement projects in Somalia for over 40 years. Oxfam is working through local partners to rebuild sustainable livelihoods, provide humanitarian assistance advocate for education for all and promote active citizenship and gender justice in Somalia.
Objective
Oxfam, in partnership with HARDO, operates nutrition sites in Hiraan region of Somalia, treating acutely malnourished children less than 5 years of age, providing nutrition counseling and supplementation to pregnant and lactating women, as well as immunization services. These humanitarian assistance needs to be documented.
Scope of work
Oxfam is seeking the services of a video producer/ director/ videographer to visually document the IMAM programme activities, showing how it has impacted the target districts and beneficiaries. The pictures and short video will be used to create awareness about the program's achievements. Photographs will be used in online and print publications. The videos will be used online as well as shown and distributed for external use.
The consultant will be expected to travel to Hiraan region in South Central Somalia at least twice and:
  • Take pictures of children and their parents/family members before, during and after receiving treatment
  • Carry out short 3-4 minute Vox-Pop type interviews with family members of the malnourished children, community members, Oxfam and HARDO staff and local leaders
  • Produce two project videos that highlight:
  • Process of treating malnutrition
  • Accomplishments of the project to date and impact to the community
Locations: Hiraan Region - Beletweyne & Bulaburte districts.
Duration: The consultancy will entail 10 days of work: 3 days of film and photography in the field, and 7 days for editing. All travel, accommodation and meal expenses will be covered by Oxfam.
Deliverables
1. Two 10 minute videos in HD:
  • Video shooting and editing – interviews/box pops of 10 families
  • Script development, narration and translation
  • 10 – 15 minute HD clip in Somali with English subtitles in DVD formats
  • Digital formats of each version of finalized film for online use
  • 15 branded DVDs of the final work
  • Web clips and all B roll footage
2. High quality/High resolution photographs:
  • High-quality and high-resolution, edited and captioned pictures of:
  • Oxfam project and the partnership with the local organisation
  • Pictures of 10 selected beneficiaries in specified locations
  • Pictures of the landscape, infrastructure and how they are being used
3. Detailed report on photography and film locations, with names and contacts of interviewees Qualifications
  • Professional photographer and videographer with experience working in South Central Somalia
  • Relevant experience in video production/editing ideally developing human interest stories for video
  • Ability to work in multicultural environment,
  • Good record of working sensitively with vulnerable children and mothers. Oxfam will conduct a background check to verify the same
  • Willing to travel to potentially insecure environments and the ability to negotiate with different communities
  • Somali language skills
