AWF is seeking a highly motivated professional to support its Spatial Analysis Laboratory. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for generation and integration of spatial data to abet characterization of conservation targets, threats and documentation of AWF’s conservation impact.
The GIS Assistant will participate in some or all of the following functions; data acquisition, editing and field work activities.
Responsibilities
- Digitization of features (roads, streams, infrastructure, and settlements) from satellite imagery via Google Earth and ArcGIS software
- Participation in site-level resource mapping programs
- Compilation, maintenance, and analysis of spatial data from various sources
- Field spatial data capturing using Global Positioning System (GPS) in AWF Landscapes
- Migration of micro files into GIS database
- Any other duties involving application of GIS and remote sensing in support of AWF program needs
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in GIS or related field. Master’s Degree preferred
- 1-2 years progressive experience in a non-profit organization and/or busy Spatial Laboratory
- Exposure to GIS & Remote sensing, conservation and natural resources management
- Knowledge of ArcGIS 9.x or 10.x and GPS-based capture skills, Google Earth KML/KMZ is essential
- Excellent organizational skills and able to multitask in a fast paced environment
- Fluency in written and spoken English and Kiswahili; French is an added advantage
- Ability to work independently and within a team in multicultural settings often in physically demanding conditions, often under tight deadlines
