Work with an innovative branch of Kenya Red Cross, responsible for the first pizza restaurant in Machakos, to support farmers affected by drought. You will work on income generation activities, project management systems and volunteer recruitment campaigns.
This is a volunteer assignment under the Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) program, an Australian Government, AusAID initiative. Airfares, living allowances, accommodation, insurance and other support is provided through the program.
The Machakos branch of Kenya Red Cross has a dedicated team of staff and youth volunteers. Due to its location in a semi-arid area prone to drought, food security initiatives feature heavily in the branch’s program portfolio. The youth program includes small volunteer-led income generation activities such as the production and marketing of seedlings. The branch has also initiated the first pizza restaurant in Machakos.
The branch wishes to expand its current activities and identify opportunities for new income generation activities. As part of this process, an Australian Volunteer has been requested to support the branch to strengthen its project management and monitoring tools.
The volunteer will also identify and deliver training to volunteers, recommend and support volunteer recruitment campaigns and assist with the use of Kenya Red Cross’ new volunteer management database.
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Experience in building the skills of other through formal and/or information training
- Strong entrepreneurial spirit
- Qualifications in community development, marketing or related area
- Self awareness, cultural sensitivity, flexibility and adaptability, resilience
To be eligible, applicants must be 18 years and over, Australian citizens or permanent residents, or New Zealand citizens with Special Category Visas.
